Dry distillation of (VI) with the same amount of soda lime as reported previously affords (VII) as the perchlorate (VIII) in 30% yield. In order to confirm the α, β-enamine structure of (VII), to a solution of the perchlorate (VIII) was added conc. potassium cyanide solution dropwise with stirring. In this case, the cyanocompound (IX) was also obtained in a quantitative yield. Attempted recrystallization of the picrate of (IX) from hot ethanol yielded the picrate of (VII) by elimination of hydrocyanic acid as shown in Chart 3.
