This report presents the kiwari-systems in the architectural manual books that were written before the early part of the 17th century. Those old records were handed down to the recent years by the KOBAYASHIS who were inaugurated as the DAIKUTORYO that was the post for the authorized carpenters in SYONAI-HAN. Their descriptions were about the architectural techniques to all kinds of architectures and the architectural formalities, so they were important to study Japanese Middle Ages architectures. Among those architectural techniques, this report presents especially the kiwari-systems of TORIl that is the gate of a shinto shrine.

However, most of the current building structural support programs are formed in conventional procedural manner, therefore most of them are inflexible. For many years, the author has studied the requirements of the computer programs that truly support building structural design. As a result, it is recommended to introduce the new type of program development method ; the FACT method, 0riginated and named by the author, which is fundamentally different from conventional procedural programs.

The paper explores the effectiveness of a new practical human behavior model and an user-oriented simulation system, developed newly for designer. In this model, a space (plan) for human activity is represented by an 3-meter hexagonal mesh. In this system, the architectural mesh library is made with general CAD software of Macintosh. And Clanguage is used the simulation program. The object facility of this study was a station with concourse deck. By using this system, a designer can simply simulate human behavior at planning in early stage.

Historical damages due to intermediate and deep focus earthquakes are reviewed on the basis of earthquake catalogs in past 100 vears. These earthquakes occurred at North-Eastern and South-Western parts of the Japan islands at a rate of 4 to 5 times per year. The earthquake catalogs indicate that only the intermediate depth earthquakes, with magnitude exceeding 7.5 and focal depth shallower than 150 km, caused destructive damages. However, the damage rank is lower than the typical interplate earthquakes along the Japan trench such as the 1968 Tokachi-oki earthquake (M=7.9).

To evaluate the total seismic vulnerability for facilities of the private enterprises, the structural modeling of factors regarding to earthquake damage is conducted. Factors are categorized in three hierarchies in reference to the recent earthquake disaster such as the Great Hanshin Earthquake in 1995. Five main categolies for the top hierarchy are selected as structural safety, functional order, fire safety, life safety and emergency management. Relations among selected factors are analyzed focusing on disaster chain relations in time and space domains.
