One hundred and nine cleft lip & palate patients were studied to analyse the ability to understand vocabulary by the picture vocabulary test.
The results were summerized as follows:
    1. In cleft lip & palate patients, the development of vocabulary was lower than that for the age group.
    2. Some degree to understand vocabulary retardation in the stimulative words for primary school children were seen in the cleft lip and palate patients compared with normal children. However, no retardation for that was observed in cleft lip and palate patients in the stimulative words for primary school and junior high school children.
    3. About 60 % of 3-4 year-old children could understand the stimulative words for primary school children. Also 8 year-olds can understand the stimulative words for junior high school students.
    4. The cause of the underdevelopment in vocabulary understanding in CLP children was mainly from the attitude of their mothers.

The purpose of this study was to clarify the effect of constructin of normal interincisal relationship before puberal growth spurt to the maxillary growth longitudinally in cleft patients by cephalogram analysis.
The subjects were 6 treated females with unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP). The control group consisted of 7 treated non cleft females (NON CLEFT) with reversed occusion.
    The findings were as follows:
    1. In UCLP, the amount of growth change in maxillary size and position was smaller than NON CLEFT.
The growth direction of the maxilla in UCLP was downward and in NON CLEFT was down and frontward.
    2. The degree of retardation of the upper-facial skeleton in UCLP developed as growth continued.
    3. The growing potentiality of the maxilla ascended slightly near the appearance time of the sesamoid bone in UCLP.
It was suggested in UCLP, when compared with NON CLEFT, that maxillary growth is not accelerated by the treatment of the anterior cross bite at an early pre-puberal growth stage, and the maxillary protrusion technique or others for the retarded maxilla must be accepted in actively growing stage.
