This paper presents the findings on the investigation of tool mark traces on 13 building components unearthed from the Ichijodani Asakura Family Site. The findings are summarized as follows. (1) A chisel is presumed to have been used to cut the threshold( shikii) grooves, with the groove widths marked using a tool shaped like a small Japanese utility knife( kogatana). It is highly improbable that a specialized Japanese handsaw for grooving( mizobiki-noko) was used. (2) The primary method for sawing lumber likely involved a two-person saw, but a smaller rip handsaw may have been used for smaller components. (3) An axe is presumed to have been used to cut the building components during the lumbering process, and an adze in the following stage. (4) End grain surfaces were cut using a crosscut handsaw or chisel.

This paper introduces the carpentry tools of the Joseon Dynasty in the autobiography of Bae Heehan, who is the last generation to know about the architectural work of palaces in the Joseon era. The book, The saw of the Joseon Dynasty has gotten rusty, dictates his life story and work of carpentry. He tells how Joseon's carpentry tools have been replaced with Japanese ones since the Japanese colonial era and explains differences between Joseon's and Japanese typical carpentry tools such as saws, chisels, planes, ink pots, and etc. The reference can be valuable materials in a sense that the characteristics of each tool are described and compared from a hands-on carpenter's point of view.
