A gastro-fiberscope equipped with a biopsy taker has been developed in Japan and we had the opportunity to first use it in patients. Owing to flexibility of the scope and by manipulation of the cuff we have devised, this instrument has enabled to take specimens from almost anywhere in the stomach under direct vision. That the fiberscope gives less discomfort to the patient than the gastroscope for biopsy and that there are almost no blind area in the stomach to safely take biopsy with it, are special features of this new instrument.
A gastro-fiberscope equipped with a glassfiber light guide has been developed in Japan and we had the opportunity to first use it clinically. In comparing it with the Hirschowitz's Gastroduodenal Fiberscope made in U. S. A., this fiberscope has following features. In contrast with reddish hue in the image guide of Hirschowitz's instrument, this apparatus has clear transparent image guide rendering a quite natural color image. The light guide has advantages to prevent tissue damage due to heating by the lamp at the tip when prolonged intense lighting is required in cinematography and TV, to use lamp outside.
