In this paper, I will focus on the places where the peasants were likely to die before the industrial revolution in the end of the 19th century. I intend to examine the mobility of peasants from the 17th Century to the 19th Century by investigating the Buddhist temple death registers in Tama County, Musashi Province which was on the outskirts of Edo City. The death places of the peasants living in Tama County spread all over Japan. The birthplaces of the persons who were from out of the parishes and died in Tama County also spread all over Japan. Not only males, adults and poor peasants but also females, children and rich farmers died far from their home villages. The number of dead persons who were from other places increased after 1860. Death places and birthplaces of the dead suggest high mobility of the peasants in the suburbs of Edo City. On general principle, if a family member of a parishioner of a Buddhist temple died out of his/her home village, the dead body was carried to his/her home village and the priest of the Buddhist temple performed a funeral service for him/her. But some dead persons were buried in cemeteries in the Buddhist temples near the death places if the home village of the dead was too far, the dead had no claimant or the dead was too poor.

This paper aims to clarify how the early Imperial Diet members argue the land system and places in modern Japan on the first Diet opened in 1890, analizing the contents of the shorthand notes of the proceedings of the Diet. The Imperial Diet was composed of the Diet members elected from each constituency and the governmental members of cabinet members and high officials. Though they were opposed about some agendas each other in the various cases, they were all the then components of the national governmental authority in the end of the nineteenth century. The first session of the House of Representatives in Imperial Diet had included some bills which the government proposed to develop some places and infrastructure on the national land. Another bill aimed at the political restructuring of the spatial structure, dividing or merging the localities. Many names of places and regions found in various discussions correspond with the main focuses of national policy planned by the national government. There were Tokyo as the imperial capital, Osaka as the largest industrial and trading city in Japan, Yokohama, Kobe and Otaru as the influential trading port, Kure, Sasebo and Yokosuka as the naval bases, Karuizawa and Naoetsu as towns along the new railway line, Tomioka as the new silk industrial town and Osarizawa and Ichinokawa mines. We can especially find out Tokyo and Hokkaido on many pages of the shorthand notes. The former was the center of Japan but the latter was the peripheral area. However those places were the intensively invested areas under the national developmental policyt. Key persons of the government like Aritomo Yamagata and Sen-ichi Shirane expressed their important views about the political system of national land space. Yamagata stressed two geopolitical concepts of the sovereign line and the profitable line from the viewpoint of national defense. Shirane explained the standards of restructuring the local administrative organs. Some member of the Diet also expressed his opinion on making the rational spatial organization of the modernizing country. Those remarks in the Diet were interpretable as geographical texts and so we can understand the quality and quantity of spatial recognition of those in power in the times.

The Yasaka Settlement is in the Atsumi Peninsula in the southernmost part of Aichi Prefecture. It was formed as a result of the first reclamation carried out by Aichi Prefecture. In this research, I will consider what kind of features are seen in the residence (i.e. a house and its ambient surroundings) of the Yasaka Settlement, focusing on the construction of the houses and their arrangement in the area. Eight settlers started reclamation on December 4, 1931, preparing for the construction of their houses and starting to grow winter crops. Until their houses were built, they lived in their parents' houses and commuted to the area. They built decent houses from the beginning to have a sense of permanent residence. The houses and the barns were completed around March or April the next year, and the settlers began to settle there with their family members. Now they were able to devote all their energies to the reclamation and agriculture. There was only one well in the settlement, and it was in the valley at the uppermost reaches of the brook. The housing lots were arranged around it, taking the form of a clustered village. The farmland was scattered in several places around the village. Being on a plateau, the Settlement had much difficulty getting water, as they were not blessed with groundwater. As mentioned above, I'd like to consider the regional features of the Yasaka Settlement by showing how the houses were built and how the housing lots were arranged in the Settlement.

The aim of this paper is to make clear the relationship between the fishing methods and the structure of fishing village of Goza settlement, Shima area, Mie pref., central Japan.
Goza settlement is located in the western part of Shima peninsula where is very famous for fishing along Pacific coast. Goza has various types of fishing, especially oriented to the fishing by fixed net fishery system to gather sardine managed by one capitalist living in this village. And he has employed a lot of villagers engaged in this system, which has given the empirical structure of this fishing village; the top of this structure is capitalist and bottom of this structure is workers of fishing. On the other hand, there are another small scale fishing methods like gill net fishery, diving fishery, fixed net fishery in small size, pearl culture and so on.
Almost of these fishing methods are managed by each families, and diving fishery is supported by only women. Each method is small scale fishery. The workers engaged in these fishing are consisted of the bottom of structure of this village.
A local capitalist living in this village has handed much money to each community organizations in this village from his income or fishing manage. This system has been traditionally continued from the time of first introducing fixed net fishery system before W.W.II. The money given to each community has been used for the funds to support the various types of activities of each community. This system showed basically the even structure of this village.

This paper concerns the creation of a "Holy Space" in the mountain village of Wada,Nagano pref., central Japan. Wada has many traditional stone statues and steles related to gods and the Buddha, which were made at the end of Edo era and the beginning of Meiji era to guard the villagers from sickness and famine. During the period of higher economic growth from 1960, these monuments were of little interest to the villagers. However, nowadays these historical and traditional images are valued by middle-aged and older urban residents. It should be possible to review these monuments and to make this village a "Holy Space" for tourists from the cities. For this purpose, we investigated the monuments and compiled a data base map, as well as planning eight model courses to visit these historical sites. We proposed this project to the leaders of the chamber of commerce and industry of Wada district, if this project is implemented and publicized, Wada may become the center of a "Holy Space" and attract visitors who will develop and regenerate this village. As a result, leaders understood this project after three years, the chamber of commerce and industry decides to put fund to create this project by preparing the advanced committee. Leaflets and Maps were printed and boards explaining were stood each near statue of gods and Buddha, and standard courses to visit the statues of gods and Buddha were shown. This "Holy Space" was opened at March, 2008. At first, some small scale project to have some excursion to each statue of traditional gods and Buddha was prepared. Some mass media informed this project by newspapers. And nowadays, visitors come to this "Holy Space" regularly. This project is one of the tries to keep and develop the mountain villages which face to the difficulties of depopulation and sever economic problems.

In 1960s and 1970s, French regional development policy ("aménagement du territoire") was characterized by the industrial decentralization conducted by the French government. In 1981, Mitterrand government, promoted the political decentralization and the authority of regional development policy was transferred to "Region". In 1990s, the "pays" policy that put importance in the cohesion of regions came into existence. And in 2000s, "the pole of competitiveness" policy that emphasizes competitiveness was born.
This presentation examines the French regional development policy in transition, focusing on the "pays" policy and "the pole of competitiveness" policy.

This paper examined how geographical characteristics of telemedicine emerge in Korea and Japan and which social and economic backgrounds have influence on them. The outstanding result is that Korean telemedicine are associated with medical institutions in the metropolitan areas, while Japanese telemedicine is based on each diagnostic area in general.
