In Japan, chemical industry has been rapidly developed after world-war II, currently accounting for about 15% of added value of manufacturing in Japan with annual sales exceeding $300 billion. Strong demands for increased productivity, higher product quality, more efficient use of energy and raw material, and tighter safety and environmental regulation have forced industrial processes very complex and highly integrated and process control systems significantly advanced. In this paper, an overview of the contribution of process control technology to the chemical industry is described historically along with the development of chemical industry in Japan.

Control technology plays important and critical roles that determine product competitiveness in electrical and electronic industries. The application area of control technology ranges from traditional power systems and home appliances to modern information systems and ITS (Intelligent Transport Systems) apparatuses. The present paper first reviews application areas that cover energy and material, information and telecommunication, and personal and home apparatuses. Next it is shown how present HDD (Hard Disk Drives) are controlled for representative embedded applications. Finally as an example of supervisory control, operation scheme of water resource network is presented.

In 1970’s engine control technology has been developed to improve the performance of emission control function. After that, many on-board control systems have been developed, for example ABS(Anti-lock Brake system)and Air Bag system. Today control & measurement technology is the key technology for automobile.
