The purpose of this study was to describe and clarify how Mrs. H, a patient with CML has survived. Research method used was as follows; 1) Mrs. H received semi- structured interview about her surviving process. 2) Story of Mrs. H's experience was recorded verbatim. 3) The life story of Mrs. H was described based on the life history method. At the time of interviewing and interpreting, investigators aimed to understand one's personal experience of illness by phenomenological approach. As a result of the interpretation, the central theme of illness experience for Mrs. H was understood as "the acceptance and survival of the trial and the loss through one's own experiences". The central theme was structured based on the 3 periods and subthemes. Recommendations for nursing practice, derived from the experience of the subject were found as following. 1) The importance of providing educational care for patient's family about one's illness and treatment. 2) The importance of improving nurses caring behaviors at treatment process. 3) The importance of propelling for nurses consultation activities.

The purpose of this study was to describe the reactions of psychiatric in-patients to the massage provided by a nurse researcher in response to their demand, and to discuss the meaning of physical touch and interaction in psychiatric mental health nursing. Data were collected in a female acute psychiatric ward by way of participant observation. Details of patients' verbal and non-verbal reactions and the researcher's own responses were recorded and analyzed according to the idea of Casement's unconscious communication and Andieu's 'skin-ego' . Many patients responded favorably to the massage and showed various reactions. In most cases, the massage made them relax and they began to talk about themselves. But some patients did not show any expression verbally or physically, which made the researcher feel difficult to communicate with them. The physical touch seemed to remind the patients of their early life or traumatic experiences before hospitalization. The reactions to the massage gave an account of their histories.

The purpose of this study is to consider the feature of interaction between patients and nurses and nursing experience in a alcoholic unit. This study analyzes qualitatively the data that are got by the participant observation in Alcoholism Rehabilitation Program that centers on the group works of a alcoholic unit in a psychiatric ward over seven months and the group interview with nurses. As for the group works, patients expressed their anger, dissatisfaction and helplessness to be stimulated their psychological social aspects of drinking problems. As the result of this, nurses had created the interaction of keeping distance from patients and "mochtitu-motaretu interaction" that is similar to co-dependence relation each other to avoid the character of attacks of patients. These interactions are influenced on that psychological walls with patients become weak because nurses sympathized with patients stories and are pressed for meeting with themselves , that self-concepts are shook by showing "the front and back" each other because nurses are with patients in 24 hours, and that the interactions are created "work of mourning" each other as congenial spirits who mourn over patients' death in succession. Nurses were overwhelmed and injured by being confronted with patients' way of living and death, Nurses need the support system, for example preparing talk meetings among nurses or other occupational persons.

The purpose of this study is to reveal the factors and structures which exist in the process of forming the meaning of illness through the narratives of those afflicted with schizophrenia. I conducted the unstructured interviews based on the life history method with 2 men with schizophrenia. I reconstructed and analyzed the narratives based on the concept of "suffering", emerging from the framework Arthur Kleiman developed. Through the analysis, I found 5 factors affecting the formation of the meaning of illness. These include "the individual's worldview", "the basic way of life", "the attitude toward social conditions", "the process of accepting the illness", and "the what-if story". In short, the meaning of illness is influenced by the "former life" before illness. In other words, each person's worldview, which has shaped each life, strongly influences how they accept their illness and what meaning they find in the illness. Specifically, each person develops their meaning of illness through dialogue with their own worldviews, whenever they confront various issues including illness. In conclusion, this paper proposes that nursing staff can better understand their patients by listening eagerly to their worldviews and by dealing with their fears of illness as well as with the illness itself, and duly provide patient-friendly care for each patient.
