We interviewed 11 lead nurses to determine the nature of nursing skills required for the provision of successful community reintegration training for 11 schizophrenic patients hospitalized for more than 3 years in a mental health care facility before discharge. The nursing skills deemed most beneficial to the successful community reintegration training of patients were : 1) to provide motivation, 2) to develop a fiduciary relationship, 3) to have unfailing patience, 4) to call into question the necessity of hospitalization, 5) to develop the patient's skills required for daily living, 6) to support the patient's intentions, 7) to promote the patient's peace of mind, 8) to propose a concrete approach to problem solving, 9) to employ the technique of repetitive skill acquisition, 10) to take calculated risks, 11) to catch the timing to determine to act, 12) to praise the patient's skills, 13) to encourage the patient to proceed positively with life, and 14) to motivate people around the patient to provide active support. By extracting these nursing skills and describing them in a concrete manner, other nurses can learn to adopt these strategies into their clinical practice of promoting successful community reintegration of long-term patients with schizophrenia.
