It is formerly reported that soy-sterol (MoristerolR) extracted from soy beans contains phytosterol, natural tocopherol and has the counter effects for hyperlipidemia. We have already cleared the effect against rabbit's arteriosclerosis, setted up by three combination methods of N2 gas inhalation, norepinephrine intramuscular injection and cholesterol oral administration, based on the study of aortic pulse wave velocity change, histochemical observation for 6 components of constitutional substances of the thoracic aorta and its quantification. This study aims to describe the effect of soy-sterols for coronary sclerosis in rabbit, so, histochemical observation and quantification about 5 components of smooth muscle cell (SMC), elastin (EL), collagen (CL), acid mucopolysaccharides (AMPS) and glycoprotein (GP) were conducted on sclerosed coronary artery which setted up by the above loading methods.
The subjects are 22 in total of 38 months, male rabbits and the details are 8 of healthy group (H group), 9 of sclerosed group (S group) and 5 of administration group (A group). As to S and A groups, the injury of the coronary sclerosis was setted up with three combination method of hypoxic method by N2 gas inhalation (2 weeks), injury method by norepinephrine intramuscular injection (16 weeks) and 0.5g/day of cholesterol oral administration (16 weeks). For A group, 200mg (1 cap) of oral administration of soy-sterol was consecutively conducted with one time a day while the loading was started.
After 16 weeks, all cases were sacrificed and the proximal site of left anterior descending branch of coronary artery including myocardium was removed and after the treatment with 10% formalin fixation and filling into paraffin, the thin specimen of 4μ was made by JB4A type of automicrotome having glass knife and the special staining for the above mentioned 5 components was executed, then their components were measured by microspectrophotometic procedure.
S group demonstrated decrease in SMC because of hypertrophy, swelling, atrophy, necrosis and extinction, however, in A group, such changes were suppressed. Especially for the volume of SMC, CL and AMPS, the significant difference was noted. The constitutional characteristics of A group was similar with H group rather than S group from the results of total evaluation by principal component analysis.
Soy-sterol contains 40% of phytosterol, 20% of natural tocopherol and 30% unsaponified substances and it was considered that the lesions of organic sclerosis were directly or indirectly inhibited by these components.

To assess an influence of ischemia on arteriolar walls, a morphometrical study was performed on arterioles in cerebral infarcted areas of various days' duration. The ratio of the summing thickness of media and adventitia to the diameter of the circle formed by internal elastic membrane was microscopically determined with micrometer. 19 cases were divided into 4 groups according to days after stroke.
There was a statistically significant increase of the ratio among group A (1-3 days), B (7-11 days) and C (14-25 days). The increase of the ratio was mainly due to adventitial thickening, consisting of fibrosis or hyalinosis. Nearly all arterioles of group D (52-71 days) were destroyed, so the ratio could not be measured.
The result suggests that one type of cerebral arteriolosclerosis such as hyalinosis and adventitial fibrosis may be a result, rather than a cause, of ischemia.
