For the purpose of studying the steady flow field of an impact modulator, the coaxial impingement of two opposing plane jets and that of two axisyrnmetric jets are considered. Since it is impossible to obtain an analytical solution, a direct numerical solution of the Navier-Stokes equations in finite difference form is proposed under acceptable simplified conditions. Finite difference equations are derived by integrating the fundamental differential equations over finite areas. To assure convergence for a wide range of Reynolds numbers, the up-wind differences are adopted for the calculation of vorticity. To improve the accuracy of the solution, a wall function is introduced. For iterative calculations, a point successive substitution method is used.
Convergent solutions are obtained for a wide range of Reynolds numbers. The numerical results are approximately in agreement with the experiments.
