This study investigates heritage tourism in historic cities regarding themed spaces and the motives of the act. First, it grasps museums and tourism spaces not as simple heritage but as themed environments and landscapes consisting of place culture and chronotopes. Second, it elaborates on how entertainment, incorporated into themed spaces such as themed environ- ments and landscapes, urges tourists to follow modelling in terms of dramatism. Finally, the relationship between tourism policy, themed spaces, scenes acting as a category of motives, and tourists is revealed. York in the UK is selected as a quality example of themed spaces and the motives of the act in heritage tourism to strengthen this logic.

There is a movement to open lodgings(Shukubo) throughout Japan. The Japan Tourism Agency has also been promoting “Terahaku,” experience-based lodging content utilizing historical resources since 2020. Historically, Shukubo have provided lodging as part of religious activities, but it is assumed that a different management style is emerging. This study focuses on the characteristics and roles of new types of lodgings, focusing on the business entities and management form of lodgings, with attention to representative examples reported overseas by JNTO and the Japan Tourism Agency’s “Terahaku” project. As a result, it was confirmed that, just as it is well known that in modern hotel management, there is a functional differentiation between ownership and management/operation, in the case of lodgings, various external actors are participating, and a multilayered management structure and functional differentiation are taking place.

In this study, a comparative analysis was performed to examine the impact that tourism economy agglomeration has on the financial affairs of local governments with a focus on tourist destinations with accommodations, using the number of lodging industry workers as an index. It was found that, in municipalities with populations under 50,000, there was a constant correlation between the level of tourism economy agglomeration and tax revenue, in particular that there was a tendency to increase resident taxes, property taxes, and bathing taxes, as well as a tendency to reduce the outflow of the younger generation. For cities with populations of 50,000 or higher, on the other hand, the study found that the effect on tax revenue from the tourism economy in areas where the tourism economy is agglomerated was low, as well as worsening financial indicators and outflow of younger generations despite increased tourism economy agglomeration.

The purpose of this study is to conduct a meta-analysis of the economic impact of tourism on a county-by-county basis, and to clarify the characteristics of tourism in each region and the role it plays. First, the number of workers and GRPs in tourism-related industries were determined. Next, a meta-analysis of direct and economic ripple effects based on the number of tourists and their consumption was conducted to clarify the characteristics of each region. The analysis revealed that the economic ripple effect/total tourism consumption was high in Tokyo (1.96) and Mie (1.70), but low in Chiba (0.95) and Fukushima (0.81). The ratio of employees to GRP was smaller than that of the prefecture’s GRP, which could be attributed to the fact that the prefecture is a labor-intensive industry with a high share of labor costs, as well as income and employment patterns in tourism-related industries.

The purpose of this study was to quantitatively clarify consumer attitudes in the Japanese overseas travel market in the 1960s. As a result of analyzing the individual data of the “Public Opinion Survey on Overseas Travel of the Japanese” conducted by the Public Relations Office of the Cabinet Secretariat in 1967, it was found that the probability of having overseas travel intentions was highest among those in their twenties. The analysis of the data on what people want to see and do on overseas travel and the countries they want to visit showed that the results differed by gender and age. These results were statistically confirmed using logistic regression analysis and chi-square test.

In recent years, the outdoor boom has revived in Japan, and glamping, which takes advantage of both campsites and hotels, is drawing particular attention. However, while many glampings have been developed, there are some facilities that deviate from what they should be. In this study, in order to understand the characteristics of glamping, the history of glampig in the United Kingdom, the United States, and Japan and the characteristics of current facilities were clarified. Considering that a glamping facility with a good balance of luxury, regional development, and environmental consideration is ideal, a total of 578 facilities are classified into 6 types, and it can be said that Japan has many luxury-oriented characteristics.

This study analyzed the success factors of crowdfunding, which is attracting attention as a new means of funding in the tourism industry, where the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic are serious. As a result of analysis limiting the target to tourism projects in Japan, factors that affect success like other fields such as explanation, activity report, were clarified. In addition, factors different from other fields such as recruitment period and videos were also shown. Other new factors have been suggested that projects to maintain existing value are more likely to succeed. Furthermore, it was suggested that the scale of the projects have been expanding and that some success factors have changed during the COVID-19 pandemic.

This study aims to clarify the state of community tourism, focusing on intermediary organizations and business operators on the case study of Tanabe City, Wakayama Prefecture. This study was based on a literature review and interviews with intermediary organizations and business operators. As a result, it was found that although the business operators do not have a sufficient understanding of the concept of community tourism, a variety of businesses were identified that could be considered as community tourism, which were originated from the solutions of local issues. In addition, with regard to the activities of the intermediary organization KTB, it was found that, although the results of activities in line with the concept were recognized, it had not yet led to changes in the local management system to promote tourism.

Recently, “biocultural diversity” has been advocated as a new form of regional revitalization, and the registration of UNESCO Biosphere Reserves, a system that aims to promote regional development by utilizing natural resources while ensuring nature conservation, has become increasingly active over the past decade or so. However, it is not known whether the regional development policies correspond to the principles of Biosphere Reserves at the local level. In this study, we examined the philosophy of Biosphere Reserves using the plans of 10 areas in Japan with the aim of obtaining suggestions for regional development in mountainous areas. Next, we compared local government plans and applications by region and field to clarify the characteristics of regional development efforts. Finally, case studies were conducted to consider the effects and challenges of Biosphere Reserves on regional development.

The Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami produced many deaths at Okawa Elementary School in Ishinomaki, Miyagi. Because what happened there at the time of the disaster was unclear, it has been reconstructed through testimonies, which created different collective memories in the forms of narratives and exhibits. In this paper, I argue that because these collective memories contain ambiguity, contradiction, wrong information, and untold facts, they are polyphonic and negotiate with other memories. Visits to the remains with such memories allow for dynamic, active, and dialogic learning in tourism.

To accommodate foreign visitors to Japan, which was rapidly rising prior to the spread of COVID-19, various efforts were made in the accommodations industry, including multilingual support and integration of internet and communications technology. Although these efforts have reduced overall dissatisfaction, foreign visitors have not contributed by expressing positive impressions and satisfaction. This study compares and analyzes Japanese and English reviews submitted by guests of the top 20 Japanese inns among foreign travelers on Tripadvisor 2020, and examines the value of the Japanese inn experience for foreign guests. While Japanese guests value unusual experiences, such as hot springs, spacious rooms, and baths, foreign guests value cross-cultural experiences, including the Japanese inn stay itself, access to the inns, and walking excursions in the local area.

The purpose of this study is to identify characteristics of tourism activities of group package tours to rural areas of Japan, by analyzing the itineraries of specific themed tours among group package tours sold in Taiwan and Hong Kong. As a result, we made three main observations. First, we observed that theme-type tourism activities (the main tourism activities of themed tours) are more diverse in rural areas compared to that of the three major metropolitan areas. Second, we found the activities are divided into “visit type” and “experience type” activities. Third, we identified the geographic areas (regional block units) for each theme-type tourism activity. Based on the above results, we discussed the current status of tourism activities and issues, etc. in rural areas of Japan.

The value embedded in personal services has been challenged by the accelerated digitization of frontline services in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. This study examines the value of frontline staff services in the tourism hospitality industry from the perspective of digital segregation and how services can be positioned amid the increasing tend toward the digital substitution of face-to-face communication, which has been the strength of Japanese-style services. The results indicate two possibilities: (1) the unique value provided by human services will remain important and the quality of human services may create greater differentiation; and (2) digital and human services will complement each other while leveraging the advantages of each.
