The first woodcut map of the city of Edo ever published is Bushu Toshima-gun Edosho Zu (Kan'ei Map of Edo) published sometime in 1632.
Among the published maps of Edo, those which are still in existence today can be classified on the basis of their original surveys as follows:
1. Reproduced maps in Edo era.
2. Kan'ei maps and their modified maps.
3. Kanbun survey map and its followers.
4 Maps compiled on the basis cf Kanbun map.
5. Maps compiled from later survey maps.
6. Other unseen maps appearing only in various source documents.
The author enumerates these maps according to publishers' names and address and date of publication.
