Avifauna was studied in 35 stands of Japanese ceder, Cryptomeria japonica D. DON, located at Kashiwa City, Chiba Prefecture, in breeding and wintering seasons in 1983 and 1984. A total of 26 species of birds were recorded, of which 23 species were recorded in wintering season and 12 in breeding season. Tarsiger cyanurus cyanurus, Scolopax rusticola, Parus varius varius, and Terpsiphone atrocaudata atrocaudata which are uncommon in the urban area were recorded in this study. The number of bird species increased with the area of the stand in both seasons, but the increasing rate was higher in wintering than in breeding season. The number of bird species also tended to increase sity the richness of plant species and the complexity of the structure of the stand. The relationships of the avifaune to the area and the structure of the stand were discussed in relation to habitat selection by birds.
