Stand growth models are very useful in predicting the growth of broad-leaved regenerated forests. As the first step to develop such a model, the stand structure from the forest floor to upper-tree layer of broad-leaved regenerated forests in Karasawayama was analyzed and the factor affecting the species composition was discussed. The results suggested that many areas of the broad-leaved forests with mixed species in Karasawayama were undergoing secondary succession from deciduous to evergreen forests. However, there were only a few evergreen broad-leaved trees in the lower layer and forest floor in some stands facing north. This effect of the slope aspect was derived from the low soil temperature and seasonal wind in winter, which makes evergreen broad-leaved trees difficult to survive. The slope aspect, especially a slope facing north, is considered to play an important role in predicting the stand growth of broad-leaved regenerated forests in Karasawayama.

The methodology for classifying the deciduous broad-leaved forests using large-scale aerial photos taken by a radio control plane is discussed. For this purpose, the aerial photos were taken in both spring and autumn seasons, and the seasonal change of leaf color was digitally analyzed using an image processing system and GIS. The study area was in the Hiruzen Experimental Forest of Tottori University located at the south-eastern foot of Mt. Daisen, where deciduous broad-leaved forests (mostly secondary forests) are widely distributed. The color composition of intensity (I), green (G) and saturation (S) was found to be effective for discriminating each tree species. Especially, photos taken periodically, just before the defoliation in the autumn season should be useful for classifying the tree species.
