In the complete denture prosthodontics, occlusal types of the artificial teeth arrangement is generally held to exert large influence on the retention, stability and support of the plete denture, and there is a fairly abundant published literature dealing with occlusal balance of the complete denture to date.
From a current point of view, an occlusal type of the complete denture at centric occlusal position always necessitates the bilateral occlusal contacts. However, there are not a few reports on the eccentric occlusal position and, for this reason, there is a disagreement among the investigators, some being in favor of the bilateral balanced occlusion, while others being in opposition.
Although there have been studies of the effect on jaw membranes and masticatory effectiveness by the difference of occlusal types, their effects on the masticatory function in terms of masticatory force and electromyography yet remain to be elucidated.
In this study, the author was concerned with an application of semiconductor elements on the complete dentures of bilateral balanced occlusion and disclusion.in an effort to find out what kind of differences would be in masticatory function on the part of the complete denture wearers. The subjects were observed to the measurement of masticatory force as well as antagonistic forces, and, at the same time, their electromyographic recordings were taken.
The results were integrated as brought out by masticatory forces and electromyography, and used for the purpose of quantitative analyses.
As a result, the following conclusions were arrived at: 1. Concerning various foods such as peanuts, ham and takuan (pickled radish), the complete denture of bilateral balanced occlusion showed a tendecy of larger masticatory and antagonistic forces than the complete denture ofdisclusion.
    2. When the masticatory rhythm and swallowing pattern were examined with respect to various foods, the length of electric discharge durability and a ratio of electric discharge durability during the electric discharge were found to be larger with the complete denture of bilateral balanced occlusion than the complete denture of disclusion. In terms of the intervals and cycles of electric discharge, on the other hand, the former gave a smaller tendency than the latter.
    3. The integrated masticatory forces on various foods showed a tendency of being larger with the complete denture of bilateral balanced occlusion than the complete denture of disclusion. But the number of masticatory times were less with the former as compared with the latter.
    4. In masticating various foods, the activity of masticatory muscles gave a smaller tendency with the complete denture of bilateral balance occlusion than the complete denture of disclusion.
    5. In terms of a given unit of integrated masticatory force and a given unit of antagonistic force in masticating various foods, the complete denture of bilateral balanced occlusion gave smaller values with significant difference than the complete denture of disclusion.
