This study examines how experienced social workers―who had around ten years of practice experience―see and deal with “uncertainty” embedded in day‒to‒day practice, through exploring how they learn as a professional. Using qualitative data from the 26 participants in the interviews, showed that the challenges and struggles they faced were related to the issues of uncertainty in being social workers. The issues were involved in the two aspects identified:uncertainty about role of social workers;and value‒based practice. The findings demonstrate that how the social workers address the issues of uncertainty in their working context can shape their learning experiences. The ways in which they face the issues are divided into the three types:quest for certainty;accepting uncertainty;and balancing certainty and uncertainty. The ways to tackle the issues of uncertainty can be closely related to their “ways of being a social worker”. It can be argued that we cannot understand their learning without setting each person’s learning experiences in the context of their way of being a social worker.
