I explained the scientific approach of music therapy(MT) as the medicine, mainly from the point of view of Evidence Based Medicine(EBM). The evidence means objective findings with universal validity. The present medicine is built based on the principle of EBM. For setting hypothesis, task, and the assessment, it is indispensable to correctly understand the reported literatures. The hypothesis is significant only when it is built on one step upper from the evidence. The paradigm should be decided as the validity of the hypothesis could be revealed by setting control group and/or comparing the difference between intervention and control period. For the scientific proof of MT and the establishment of music therapist as a medical career, it is necessary to put the evidence upon another, though that takes much time and effort.

Doctors place importance on stability of patients and music therapists place importance on extraordinary experience by which patients feel a sense of fulfillment. Doctors pay their attention to patients' "difference from the average, "whereas music therapists pay their attention to patients' "health." For treatment, doctors make decisions based on evidences but music therapists also use their "intuitions" and "aesthetic judgments" to make decisions.Such differences between doctors and music therapists are not confrontational but rather complementary. In order for music therapy to demonstrate its effectiveness in medical scenes, it is important for both doctors and music therapists to recognize the difference in stances between them and their complementarity.

The Music therapy conference was held on a patient with severe mental retardation. The patient was a 5-year-old girl. Her major problems were as follows; little vocalization, short attention span, stereotype behavior, and crying constantly during music therapy sessions. We discussed how to deal with these problems and what to do in music therapy according to the patient’s developmental level.
