The Kozukayama Tunnel is a center-drift and center-pillar type twin-bore tunnel.Since the role the center pillars were to play was of critical importance, assumption of loads acting on the center pillars was an important consideration in design. Therefore, on the basis of the results of FEM analysis and measurement data from past projects, the total overburden load was assumed for an earth cover depth of 1D (D: width of twin-bore tunnel) and the overburden load corresponding to 1D was assumed for an earth cover depth greater than 1D. These assumptions were used in the structural design of the center pillars. Results of measurements indicated that the assumptions were reasonable.

The behavior of bond strength of five types of bolts is investigated by laboratory pull-out test. In steel bar, bond stress is transferred by mechanical interlocking between knots of steel bar and grout. On the other hand, bond strength behavior of cable bolts is mainly governed by friction between PC strand and grout. Bond strength of tested cable bolts are lower than those of steel bar, but it showed that indented PC strand cable bolts are useful bolts to have twice bond strength compared with ordinary PC strand. On the influence of grout type (cement and mortar) on bond strength, it seems that bond strength of cable bolts are independent on two grout types. Numerical simulations of laboratory pull-out test and excavations and prereinforcement by cable bolting of large span tunnel are carried out to study the application of cable bolt element in FLAC to bond strength behavior.

The purpose of this paper is to examine the support effect of the cable bolt based on the mechanism that the axial force of the cable bolt is induced according to the relative displacement between the cable bolt and the rock mass. First, a estimation method of the bonding characteristics is proposed, which utilizes the result of
in situ pull-out test. Then, the numerical experiments are carried out to understand the support effect of the cable bolt in terms of the frequency of discontinuities. The result of the numerical experiments indicate that the support effect of the cable bolt is more efficiently exhibited in discontinuous rock mass than in continuous rock mass.

Pre-reinforcement ahead of a face using long steel pipes and consolidation grouting, known as an
umbrella method, is the promising method to sustain the stability of a tunnel face and to reduce the ground settlements. However, the rational design methodology has not yet been established.First of all, the behavior of the ground around the tunnel supported by the umbrella method due to tunnel excavation is described.Next, the behavior of support members is closely examined based on the field measurements.Finally, a couple of notes for the design and construction techniques regarding the umbrella method are described.

The authors confirmed constructability and quality of shotcrete improved by adjusting Viscosity and flowability of fresh concrete using limestone powder, silica fume, and superplasticizer for shotcrete. However, there are some uncertain matters in this high quality shotcrete, the execution management test for the viscosity and the resistance to freezing and thawing, for instance. A simulation method using frame analysis with crack propagation incorporated is developed and applied to a single track railway tunnel deformed on its lining and countermeasures are provided on it. Comparative analyses are done to determine the effects of countermeasures. The results are compared against field data on the tunnel and in-situ applicability of the method is studied with the finding that this analysis method can evaluate the effect of these countermeasures.

The objective of this study is to evaluate earth pressure acting on two shield tunnels constructed closely in parallel in soft clay soil by using centrifugal test and F.E.M analysis.From the result of centrifugal test, it is appeared that the earth pressure of the first constructed tunnel affected by the construction of the second tunnel is larger than that by the construction of the first tunnel.

A centrifuge model test were conducted for evaluating the lower limit pressure of face stability of slurry shield in sandy ground. The ground deformation caused by the decrease in the slurry pressure was observed by CCD camera during the test. The results were summarized as follows;(1) The deformation of sandy model ground developed to the ground surface in a constant width.(2) Rankine's active earth pressure may beover-designed as lower limit pressure of slurry.(3) The redistribution of earth pressure by the excavation should be taken into consideration in a exact study of lower limit pressure of slurry.

This research aims to confirm the function of the newly developed model on acting load on shield with copy cutter and to evaluate the copy cutter effects quantitatively. In the evaluation of the copy cutter effects, the shield behavior during excavation obtained by the developed shield simulator was in use. The validity of this model was discussed by the comparison between the shield behavior with copy cutter and that without copy cutter. Furthermore, the optimum control parameters on copy cutter, such as length, location, and range, were obtained, based on the radius of curvature in horizontal and vertical direction of tunnel. As conclusions, the followings were made clear: 1) the obtained results have similar tendency with the experimental law; and 2) this model can represent the copy cutter effects quantitatively.

Wing segments are developed aiming the efficient moment transfer at the joints of shield lining to maintain necessary lining stiffness in very soft ground where enough passive pressure is not mobilized, and to reduce the cost of joints. In developing wing segments full-scale loading tests have been conducted.
The test results show that combination of the shearing stiffness and the overhang length of the segment joint could attain sufficient moment transfer at joints. Unlike ordinary segments, the number and size of bolts could be reduced in very soft ground because the moment transfer by bolts is not significant.

In grasping the behavior of the surrounding ground and foregoing tunnel by a closely running tunnel in the parallel-shield-construction, it is necessary to evaluate the influence by the dispersion in excavation control. The paper describes the result of excavation control by a unified control system in the subway construction of four parallel shield tunnels, and the characteristic mechanism of the ground behavior based on the premise of confirming the absence of the dispersion of significance in the control of excavation. When tunnels are excavated under bad condition, auxiliary methods such as forepoling, face bolt, shotcrete are often used to keep the tunnel face stable. To use the auxiliary methods appropriately, it is necessary to clarify the mechanism of its effect and to evaluate its effect correctly.
In this paper, centrifugal model tests and three-dimensional Finite Element Method were carried out to verify the effect of face bolt for the tunnel face stability and to investigate the influence of face bolt length and position on the face stability.

When shallow tunnel with large cross-section is excavated, some problems are caused by the subsidence of ground surface. Therefore, in engineering practice, FEM analysis is often used to evaluate the behaviour of surrounding ground of such a tunnel. In the case of deep tunnel, excavation analysis using FEM is useful because there are many engineering experiences. But, in the case of shallow tunnel, it is difficult for engineers to evaluate the behaviour of surrounding ground during excavation. In this research, an investigation on numerical modelling of excavation and ground for tunnel excavation analysis using FEM is carried out considering the effect of gravity on tunnel behaviour.

Recently, the need for shallow tunnel with large cross-section which has three vehicular lanes such as the New Tomei and Meishin Expressway is increasing. In the case of these tunnels, influence of geometrical and mechanical properties of rock joints on stability of surrounding rock masses are not enough to be investigated for lack of enough experiences.
Therefore, in this research, some numerical investigation by using distinct element method (UDEC code) is carried out. Then, the effect of deformation property of rock joints on the behaviour of surrounding rock masses is discussed.

The effects of cablebolting for pre-reinforcement of weak rocks are investigated by using numerical analyses. The results show that cablebolting could improve the post-peak behavior of the rock mass; i. e., it makes rockmass strengthened and more ductile. The design concept for tunnels used cablebolts as pre-reinforcing elements are also discussed. It is concluded that the possibility ofreduction of tunnel support members is suggested.

The stability of constructing tunnels at jointed rocks is susceptible to geological characteristics depending on the extent of cracking and weathering. Thus, the prediction of geological characteristics of these rocks ahead of a tunnel face is very important both from a safety hazard point of view and economical construction. We have developed an image-analysis system that can detect the locations of fault-shatter zones in the tunnel at an early stage of construction. A distinctive feature of this system is its ability to detect geological changes directly by digitizing geological information. And, another distinctive feature of this technique is the possibility of conducting a real time analysis by using a digital camera to observe the tunnel face without halting construction.

The adoption of an electrical prospecting, which measures the rock resistivity, has increased as a geological survey of a tunnel. To apply the electrical prospecting to the tunnel rock classification and tunnel support design, it is necessary to clarify the relation between the ground condition and the rock resistivity. In this paper, the authors measured the rock resistivity and physical properties such as pure water, degree of saturation porosity using the core sample. And the authors also investigated the relation between the rock resistivity and the ground condition at the tunnel face.

Seismic exploration in tunnel is effective to predict geological boundaries or fault fracture zone at ahead of tunnel working face. TSP (Tunnel Seismic Prediction) method is a kind of reflection method using seismic wave. Some in-situ surveys and statistical examinations were carried on to investigate the characteristics of objects. It is not clear from the results of in-situ surveys for acoustic impedance of rock mass around the objects, but some significant correlation was found from statistical examinations using by actual exploration data TSP method was influenced by distance from the face to objects and number of fissures between receiver and seismic source.

TSP (Tunnel Seismic Prediction) system is a seismic reflection survey for probing and sounding ahead of the rock tunnel face. We have carried out many TSP surveys more than twenty times. In this paper we compare two cases of TSP survey which carried out at different area in geological structure. On the basis of these results, it has been made clear that result of TSP survey is affected with geological structure in investigated section. TSP survey is one of the geophysical explorations for estimating characteristics of geology ahead of a tunnel face by using the seismic wave. Since this survey has the advantage of relatively wide survey area and of being able to carry out in short time, it has been used under construction site. The result of a comparison of TSP and the geology shows that a concentration area of seismic reflection surfaces corresponds with a fracture zone.
In this paper, we discussed TSP survey accuracy. As a result of the survey and the geology data analysis, an error in predicted position of the fracture zone ahead of tunnel face by TSP is approximately 5m except for some survey data. The main factor of the error with a view of the geology might be a uniformity of rock hardness in the survey area. It shows that it is necessary to pay attention to the assumed Vp for TSP analysis. Therefore, to improve TSP survey reliability, the existing geological data obtaind before the survey should be important.

More than fifteen years have passed since JH employed the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) as a standard method of tunneling, in which shotcrete and rock bolts are used for supports.
The NATM is an approach or philosophy which features the continual monitoring of the rock movement and the revision of supports to obtain the most stable and economical lining. However, there is no concrete method for revising support reflecting the results of monitoring.
Thus, JH creates a new system which consists of new rock mass classifications and new standard support patterns in order to select the most suitable support pattern at the tunnel construction sites, by analyzing data collected from tunnel construction sites and experimental works. This new system has been introduced into nationwide tunnel construction sites of JH on a trial basis. We describe herein the results of the introduction of the new system.

At a tunnel in squeezing ground, loads influence on not only primary supports but also secondary linings. It is necessary that a design method estimates future loads acting on secondary linings, and confirms a long-term endurance as a permanent structure. However, the design method mentioned above has not been established yet. This paper deals with an effective design method for planing secondary linings based on investigations of some tunnels in squeezing ground, which were constructed by the Japan Railway Construction Public Corporation. The method of calculating loads acting on secondary linings by using creep constants and displacement velocity just before constructing secondary linings is confirmed to be effective.

Tunnel face collapse due to water seeping into sandy ground, rises a big factor decreasing the safety of construction. It is the purpose of this report to investigate the physical properties of loosening sandy ground and to classify the ground from a viewpoint of the tunnel face stability. We studied important parameters in a water seeping experiment, a middle size sand tank experiment and a numerical analysis. As a result we found that the stability of tunnel faces depended on the hydraulic gradient, and the critical hydraulic gradient closely related the relative density and the fine grain content of sandy soil.

The Electro-Blasting technology for slot drilling assisted tunnel excavation has been developed. Experiments to evaluate this method were carried out on granite rock faces in a quarry and a dam site. The new remote charging system for the explosives and the clay tamping by air is developed to eliminate the dangerous works of the charging and the jointing of leg wires as well as the cleaning drilling holes.
Until now, the prototype machine designed to supply explosives for a drilling hole was produced in the first stage. Through the basic experiment and the in-site test execution using this machine, it was verified the safety and the validity of the whole system to apply the real works. The practical machine has been designed and produced to supply explosives for 3-4 drilling holes simultaneously, and this system will be soon applied to the tunnelling works.

This paper reports tunnelling method applied at TAKATORIYAMA TUNNEL (Line for North) in urban site. In the urban site, there are many adverse conditions. First, the site is under Suma Fault and ground condition and groundwater condition appeared in tunnel excavating may be discontinuous under fracture zone by the fault. Various ground conditions are distributed in vertical direction (i. e. in excavating direction) not in horizontal direction. Morever, the shallow overburden and poor ground (weathered granite and fault clay) are adverse conditions too. Second, under those conditions, the tunnel have to be constructed in ways that cause the least amount ofdetrimental damage to surface structures, i. e., to minimize ground deformation as much as possible. The tunneling method applied at the site is advancing pilotdrift method. In the drift, various rock tests and analyses are done and th results will become useful data in selecting the support of the main tunnel which can reduce the ground settlements.

To restrain the tunnel settlement in soft ground, the reinforcement method of tunnel supports legs with jet-grouting before excavation were adapted. The uniaxial compressive strength of ground which the tunnel was excavated are about 0.2-2.OMpa. The effect of reinforcement was as follows.
1) The settlement of tunnel supports legs were reduced to approximately 50 % compared with no reinforcement pattern at the same ground condition.
2) The settlement were increased as the rock strength was more soft, but the velocity of the settlement were lower. So the next reinforcement method was adapted, before the rock condition was very bad.

Hard rock tunnels are usually excavated by means of the drill and blasting method. But this may not be allowed due to noise or around vibration problems when the tunnel is located in urban areas or exsisting important structures. Since the number of these cases is increasing recently, the low vibration tunnelling methods are becoming more important.
The mechanical pre-cutting method using a wire saw machine has been developed. The method involves cutting the tunnel perimeter using a wire saw before the latter is excavated by the controlled blasting. This paper describes the outline of the method and its application to the intersection of the two tunnels at the Miharu dam.

In Okutataragi pumped storage plant project, the vault section of underground powerhouse was excavated by blasting with continuous slots, for reducing blast damage in surrounding rock mass of the cavern. To confirm the effect of that method, blasting vabrations were measured in-situ rock mass at excavtions by only conventional blasting and by that method. The experiment shows the vibration velocity was reduced to 1/10 compared with the value in conventional blasting. And excavation of vault section was finished with no trouble and about 24.5 hours /one syscle time on the average.

Raise-drilling is commonly used as a mechanical method for drift excavation of shaft construction in Japan. The practical application of the machine to drift excavation is from Φ 800-1, 750mm in diameter of drift to date. At the Okutataragi underground power station project, the use of small diameter drilling machine was likely to cause the blockade in the drift for the surge tank shaft excavation and become a serious construction trouble. Then, a large caliber raise-drilling (Φ 3, 412mm) machine was newly developed, and applied to drift excavation of the shaft. Prior to the reaming drilling, excavation and drilling data were intensively collected at pilot bore excavation, and analyzed. Then, the reaming drilling Φ 3, 412mm was executed based on those analysis. The paper describes the development of large caliber raise-drilling machine for shaft excavation, and demonstrates that the excavation of the shaft of l=137m is successfully completed by the machine.

We applied Raise Boring Method for inclined shaft which is 434m-diameter, 340m-long and 70degrees inclined in Bukou mine. It was first time that RHINO 2006DC, large raise boring machine made by Tamrock Finland, was used in Japan and this is the world's largest class raise boring project in inclined shafts,
We have broken through it with only 0.5% error in spite of some troubles that was caused by geological condition, very cracked limestone, We have overcome these troubles by some new technologies, for example memory type direction and inclination measurement system, excavation management system, solid stabilizer and so on.
This experience suggest us a spread of possibility of Raise Boring Method.

While constructing, large deformation was observed on the tunnel wall (up to 400mm) and ground surface above the tunnel (over 500mm settlement). It was turned out from 3-dimensional displacement measurement and various laboratory tests of rock, that strength depressing by slaking besides rapid' loosening' of rock mass by excavation caused such large deformation. So fast closure of ring and chemical injection to loosening zone had advantage to control deformation.

In tunnel, unexpected appearance of heterogeneous rocks such the faults at the face can produce serious problems for safety, planning and costs of excavation. Because of this, estimates of the geological conditions ahead of the face as soon as possible are most important subject, and several methods of fore survey have been proposed. However, these methods as, used individually, were not satisfactory to both of accuracy and extent of exploring.
In this study, the fore survey system combined of in-tunnel seismic survey and rock drilling survey was proposed. Between these methods descrived above, the former can survey further from the face than latter, and the prediction by latter is more accurate than that by former. Therefore, this system can obtain merits of accuracy and extent of exploring. And, as the result of application this system to the tunnel under construction, the geological prediction approximately coincided with geology for the exploratory section ahead of the face.

At present, Attention has been paid by engineers to design the rational support system and lining of three-lane road tunnel, because of the feature of the flat large cross section. In this paper, in order to investigate the mechanical performance of the support system and lining of Tieshanping tunnel, a three-lane road tunnel, a series of fracture model tests and the analysis of FEM were carried out. The tests and FEM analysis are aimed at the assessment of the tunnel stability under first support system and secondary lining.

The cost of NATM can be decreased by the selection of suitable support system depends on geological condition. In this paper, the way how we can select a suitable support system is proposed based on convergence measurement, which is very sensitive to the behaviour of rock mass. The authors find out the relationship between allowable limit of convergence derived from critical strain and allowable limit of support stress derived from FEM analysis. Using this relationship we can choose ideal support system. The validity of this method is confirmed at Nou tunnel.

In TBM tunneling one of the most important subjects to achieve the rapid completion is how to excavate smoothly in bad rock conditions where rock fall or small scale of rock collapse would occur. In order to settle the theme we've developed SFRC liners, steel fiber reinforced concrete light segments, in which a short-time of framing by adopting completely bolt less joints, etc, are characteristic. This paper describes the outline such as structure, the support design, concrete mixture, and the full scale break down tests about SFRC liners.

Cost-efficiency is vital in the construction of the New Tomei Meishin Expressway tunnels which have large cross section, planned by the Japan Highway Public Corporation. For the purpose of achieving cost-efficient tunneling, new high-strength shotcrete should be used for those tunnels in order to reduce design thickness of shotcrete and volume of excavation. We have performed a series of laboratory and field tests to develop it, and finally we proposed mix proportion for the high-strength shotcrete which can obtain strength of 36N/mm
2 at an age of 28-days.

The tunnel repairment method with high-strength mortal rainforced by FRP will be able to apply economically for the old cracked tunnel lining. However, before the application, the several mechanical tests should be demanded for the compound structure, consist of old concrete and new sprayed mortal. This report is aimed to clean the shearing or bending strength as well as the binding strength between both materials, by loading tests with manufactured test pieces. Conclusivelly, the sprayed mortal with long carbon fiber reinforcement appeared expected effects in amending against bending stress and bending toughness.

Gokuraku Bridge is a concrete arch bridge which is under constructed in Toyama. The large-diameter inclined caisson type pile by NATM is adopted for the foundation of this bridge.
The steel-arch supports at bench were omitted by designing. And the adequacy of the tunnel supports was confirmed by three-dimensional FEM.
On excavation of the pile, the top heading and horizontal bench method was adopted and the inclined shaft equipment was improved for construction machines getting down to bottom by themseif.

The project of Trans-Tokyo Bay Highway Kawasaki Tunnel Ukishima-South uses the world larghst 14.14m diameter slurry shield machine with segment automatick assembling robot. This shield machine uses a segment assembing robot which carries a out series of segment assembly work automatically. When a segment is transported to aspecified position by a carriage, segment assembly work, from lifting, transpotation, storing and sending out, to nut supply, assembly and bolt tightening is carried out.This report deals with the featurs and operation achievements of this automatic assembling robot.

Because of crowding in underground work and economy of space, very close twin railway shield tunnels or excavation work close to shield tunnel will have to be planned in urban areas. In that case, acting earth pressure will be complicated. To evaluate this influence of the adjacent tunnel or open cut excavation, three trial design methods for the tunnels are discussed in this paper. Consequently, method of the two-ring beam-spring model calculation with the load obtained from two-dimensional plain strain finite element method produced the most reliable calculation outputs.

The design of lining segment of a shield tunnel used to be done up to now by routine calculation method. In this method, earth pressure, water pressure and ground deformation are simplified, and existence of joint of segment is also ignored or simplified. Therefore calculation result becomes different from real behavior. Several experiments and analyses were carried out with the purpose to evaluate the earth pressure, the water pressure with precision and to grasp the ground deformation which acted on segmental lining, and to produce an exact model of joint of segment. As a result, a design of more reasonable segmental lining than the one so far employed has been developed.

The authers suggest prestressed RC shield lining which has circular prestressing and anchorage. This structure which offers high quality, cost performance and workability, locates the segment joints away from the point of maximam bending moment. This report describes a series of fundamental performance tests of the prestressed RC shield lining (effective prestress, joint performance and stiffness and strength). As a result of the prestress test, it was confirmed that prestressing and anchorage at one point per circle provided sufficiently effective prestress. As a result of the loading test, it was confirmed that the structure in which the joints are located 20° away from the maximam bending moment points had sufficient strength.

In shield tunnel design, total overburden pressure was applied to soft ground. But it is not clear the mechanism of acting earth pressure on the segments. Especially it is not clear to determine of designing earth pressure in stiff clay. And the design force of segment is effected the coefficient of lateral pressure A and the coefficient of subgrade reaction k. In this paper we investigated the relationship between initial and final earth pressure on the segments and studied the earth pressure of segment design in clay based on measurement in site. And we carried out simulating analysis which used the usage method and investigated of A and k for design.

There are four hollow parts in the cross section of the three-centered shield tunnel and the rubber gasket for cut-off of water at the tunnel entrance is pulled up around these parts because of the tension in the gasket.
Application of the rubber tube which is expanded by pumping up and press the gasket against the skin plate of tunnel structure has been attempted in order to improve the waterproofing performance of the gasket and the model test has been carried out to examine the performance of the method.

In the mud pressurized shield method, water blows out under high water pressure, and stable control of pressure at the face becomes impossible. Technologies have been developed to cut off water by sand plug zones, addition of chemicals, etc., but have not yet fully solved the problem.
In order to solve the problem, we developed the Twin-screw conveyor. This equipment cuts off water by fitting together the helical paddles of two screw conveyors, and mechanically controls the pressure at the face. In this study, a prototype was manufactured for the test, which confirmed tremor-free, stable control at the face under a water pressure of 10kgf/cm
2, and efficient soil removal through the number of screw rotations.

Pre-overcutting outside shield machines is required to remove the NOMST wall at the extra cross-section in case of existing the extra outer part of shields such as outer pipes for inserting mortar into the excavated void. New methods were developed to cut the NOMST wall certainly by rotating type cutting equipments. Two equipments were made, one is the vertical type, the other is the horizontal type. Experiments were conducted to investigate the performance of these cutting equipments. By conducting the experiments, we verified that the two equipments could cut the NOMST wall at a short time and discharge the muck fairly well. Furthermore, we found out the optimum operating conditions and knew some informations as to operating the equipments in the real shield job.
