In this study, we have collected the conjunctival swabs from 55 dogs and 60 cats with abnormality in the conjunctiva or the cornea. And we attempted to identify the pathogenic microbes causing the diseases and at the same time examine and discuss the possibility of identifying the causes by the other factors.
As a result, it is suggested that these factors would not have much relevance to the detection rate of bacteria with a little number of test subjects and etc. However in order to perform the treatment based upon EBM (Evidence Based Medicine), we believe it is necessary to conduct such conjunctival swab and scraping exam etc. as is currently called "Laboratory Examination".

Two beagle dogs of 195 males and 195 females from Marshall Farm Inc., NY, USA, had abnormal findings in optic fundus before using toxicologic studies in our facility. On routine opthalmic examination, one male (Case 1: 10-month-old at receipt) showed no tapetum lucidum in both eyes, and the other one male (Case 2: 6-month-old) showed increasing reflectivity at the upper side of the optic disk in both eyes. Further special examinations, including fluorescein angiography, electroretinograms, and histopathological examination were conducted and we diagnosed Case 1 as tapetum coloboma and Case 2 as retinal dysplasia, respectively.
