It is reported that clear and stereoscopic figure of the optic fundus can be obtained by using an aspheric surface lens in combination with indirect ophthalmoscope1). However, it is not so easy to detect retinal fold in cases of albino animals even if the above combined method was applied, since the retinas in albino animals are semitransparent. We report the incisive and simple method for detecting retinal fold in albino rats, and it is easily achieved by lessening an illumination diameter of the ophthalmoscope. When the above method was applied to 813 animals of each sex of Crl:CD(SD) rats, at 5 weeks of age, retinal fold was observed in 7.4% of males and 8.1% of females.
