We have established the world's first micromachine laboratory at newly-built national museum of emerging science and innovation in Tokyo. In this laboratory, a microstereolithography system developed by us is set up for providing several types of real three-dimensional micro-arts such as a micro space shuttle model and a wine glass model. The main aim of this laboratory is to grow the creativity of young people through making of micromachines by themselves. In the near future, several attractive programs such as a summer camp which young people design and make their own micromachines, and a micro art contest are planed.

In the DASH flight experiment, we planned to establish the high speed reentry technology, using a reentry vehicle with 16 kg in weight and 40cm in diameter. The planned reentry speed was approximately 11 km/sec and the aerodynamic heating environment is designed to be close to the one for the high speed reentry expected for the vehicle coming back to earth from an interplanetary exploration. The demonstration of such high speed reentry was expected to establish a key technology desired for the sample return mission for the interplanetary exploration. The launch of the DASH vehicle was carried out at Feb. 2002. Even though the demonstration flight of the DASH vehicle was not properly carried out, another attempt for the demonstration is desired to be carried out in near future.

航空宇宙技術研究所では、宇宙開発事業団、宇宙科学研究所と協調して、現在の使し捨て型ロケットに代わる高効率で信頼性を高めた再使用型宇宙輸送システムの開発を目指し、技術実証を目的としたいくつかの実験機構想を検討中である。そのうちの、H-IIAロケットの相乗りペイロードとして打ち上げるピギーバック型再突入テストベットについて構想案を紹介する。
