In vitro culture techniques of mammalian preantral follicles are attractive not only for a basic research of folliculogenesis, but also for low cost and mass production of livestock embryos for transfer, human infertility therapy and oocyte banks of endangered species. Preantral follicles with growing oocytes including cows, pigs and human have been recently possible to develop at the stages of antral follicles in vitro in similar with the preantral follicles of experimental animals such as mice and rats.
Important factors, which can develop the preantral follicles to the antral follicles, are a minimization of follicular cell damage during the follicle isolation from ovary and are an optimization of follicle culture medium.
Recent studies uncovere that gonadotrophins, steroid hormones and growth factors are deeply involved in the growth and development of follicles and their oocytes.
