Based on the practices of the Odaka Reconstruction Redesign Center in Odaka Ward, Minamisoma City, Fukushima Prefecture, this study examines land use methods and the process of building them in the areasa affected by the nuclear power plant accident, using the three districts of downtown, Otomi and Kawabusa. There is an interrelationship between “platforms,” which are local characteristics, “actors” as the center of activities, and “recipes,” which are specific land use methods. This paper focuses on a small green space called “Telajakan” in Bali to reveal its public nature. Telajakan is characterized by the diversity and functions of planted plants. The residents of the houses owning telajakan are responsible for its management, but non-residents can also use the plants. Referring to the discussion of “legitimacy” in the commons theory, this paper uses Penglipuran village, being developed as a tourist destination, to show that the socio-ecological layeredness and the public nature based on it may be reduced due to the impact of marketization, even though the involvement in the telajakan is expanding.

The objective of this research is to clarify the actual conditions of building constructions and production systems of that era from the aspect of those of ‘un-historic’ buildings. Moreover, literature researches about the industrial situations and material production systems in that age were conducted, and compared with the analysis on the completion reports.

Drift-pinned joints with steel inserted plate are commonly used in wooden buildings, and it is known that these kinds of joints are failed by splitting at earthquakes, but there is no authorized method to estimate their strength. In this paper, the evaluation method of splitting strength on the joints was proposed, and verified its validity by experiments. The results showed the method can estimate the splitting strength with less than 30% accuracy. However, there also remained the issue that the strength was underestimated at the joints with a thickness of 120 mm, although it was on the safe side.

In this paper, focusing on “reconstruction of homes” in tsunami-affected areas, we estimated the number of self-reconstructed households by municipality and analyzed the relationship with tsunami damage. In addition, we evaluated the projects regarding reconstruction of homes, and analyzed changes in population and number of households by district/administration. As a result, the repairing contributed to the self-reconstruction rate. Large-scale projects with longer construction periods tend to have more vacant spaces, resulting in higher unit costs of project costs. Where the population has declined significantly in six months, the population has declined more in eight and a half years.

The present study proposes an inclusive approach for the sustainability assessment of vernacular constructions. It focuses not only the availability of construction materials by resource management, but also considers life style such as land use, working style, food habitat etc.. The proposed approach is applied to Launaura in Tanna island of Vanuatu, looking at vernacular and local houses. The study demonstrates that the sustainable constructions of such houses encounter difficulty if the community relies on internal resources. However, it is possible to alleviate the exploitation of currently unused forest by increasing cash income gained from labor work outside the village.

Optimization of part of or the entire abandoned private lands for public purposes.
This project aims to improve the living environment at Kaida Village in Kunimi Town, Fukushima Prefecture, by promoting the public use of private lands abandoned. This project resulted in utilizing two private lands through the creation of the private land utilization area map.
