In the Ohya area of Utsunomiya, Tochigi, the proximity of work and residence has been practiced up to the present. In this area, quarrying and agriculture have been practiced, and we investigated the characteristics of life styles and spaces where people live in close proximity to these industrial sites. It is hoped that the development of the area will retain the characteristics of both residential areas and places for tourism and industry. In light of this, we proposed a mobile work space and bedroom as a work and residence sharing space by considering fluid ways of working and living.

This study is a survey of architecture with walls made of cob construction. As a result of the investigation, the relationship between the use and distribution area of the shed and the composition of the cob wall section was confirmed. Material tests on the samples showed that they were strong enough to support the vertical load of the building and that the grain size tended to be different between stone and earth piles. Environmental measurements showed that the temperature and humidity of buildings with earthen walls tended to be more stable compared to the outside temperature.

The environmental cognition of residents is an important factor in the formulation of sustainable tourism and regional strategies. The analysis of the relationship between the environmental cognition of residents and the spatial characteristics has not progressed. In this study, we selected a village in Ishigaki Island that has a rich history and accumulated efforts for regional development, and analyzed their spatial characteristics, with the aim of clarifying the relationship between them and environmental cognition. As a result, we pointed out several relationships between spatial characteristics and landscape values, as well as between landscape values and place attachment.

Making public spaces a hub for community revitalization using community platform
In Miyamae-ku, Kawasaki City, a typical suburbian residential area of Tokyo, we developed a community platform to gather local activities and then visualized them in an outdoor public space in an event called Machikado Share. By making community actors and activities visible to each other and to the public this way, mutual understanding and respect among them as well as activation of their activities have occurred (emergence). The formation and operation of a community platform and its bearers (platformers), and its operation methods were confirmed to be vital. This is promising as a method for community revitalization.

This paper studies the modernization of houses and people’s yearning for them through the analysis of six houses by women clients and the way they were presented in the women’s magazines in the interwar Japan. The houses could be categorized as Japanese or International Modernist or mixed style, but they mostly eliminated the feudalistic aspects of the traditional houses and reflected the clients’ lifestyle as independent women. Some houses were presented with the images of clients, and provided actual spaces for their female circle, which nurtured a sense of community among them.

Prefabrication techniques and modern amenities were envisioned and designed in various ways in early-twentieth-century Japan. Designing a novel, walled house with prefabricated—rather than conventional post-and-beam—construction was viewed as a way tocreate an ideal new residential lifestyle. The introduction of electrical, kitchen, and heating equipment brought to life the image of modern comforts within the walled spaces. This article ends with a re-examination of modernist architects’ endeavors to apply Trocken Montagebau (drywall construction) in the 1930s, demonstrating that these served as an impetus to integrate the design of prefabricated
structures and equipment.

To predict the occurrence of airborne algae, which is the main cause of soiling on exterior walls, and to establish a sensing index, measuring the equilibrium moisture content of the algae, improvement the growth prediction model, research the soiling evaluation experiment were conducted. As a result, it was clarified that the algae population on exterior walls exposed to rainfall increases significantly compared to exterior walls that are not exposed to rainfall, due to the moisture supply from rainfall and the algal moisture absorption and desorption properties. Furthermore, it was shown that the human perception of soiling is strongly correlated with the area ratio and the color difference of the soiling, and that when these two factors increase, people evaluate the degree of soiling to be large, making it possible to quantitatively indicate the perception using physical indicators of soiling.

To maintain buildings in good condition and to make them a stock of society, it is essential to plan and implement a regular maintenance management plan. In cold climates, the temperature difference between the inside and outside of a house is large, and moisture damage is likely to occur, which can cause serious problems if proper maintenance and management is not carried out. In this report, we made a flow chart of the deterioration of highly insulated houses by investigating the actual conditions of problems and maintenance and organized the corresponding inspection and maintenance methods. In addition, we examined how maintenance management affects the life cycle cost of a house from construction to sale and distribution.

Direct participatory research on planning, renovation works and investigations of public housing.
In November 2019, we received the proposal from the city of Nagasaki to live students of “Nagasaki Institute of Applied Science” into municipal housing. We suggested that some academic surveys and research should be done by us beforehand, and the results should be applied to the housing project. Those were “understanding the needs of the elderly and the child-rearing generation in their daily lives“ and ”safety in natural disaster”. This plan was certified as one of the city's priority projects, and carried out with the renovation planning, renovation works and investigations.
