This research investigated the “Shuhokiku, ” an Edo-era bestseller, said to have been authored by Manase Dosan (1507-1594) and supplemented by Manase Gensaku (1549-1631), The investigation yielded the following results:
    (1) “Shuhokiku” is surmised to be the oral discourse of Manase Gensaku's disciple, Okamoto Genya (1587-1645), transcribed by Genya's student.
    (2) Of the prescriptions included in the “Shuhokiku, ” seventy percent are quotations from Gong Ting Xian's medical treatises. There are numerous quotes from Gong Ting Xian's works, particularly the “Wanbing Huichun”; prescriptions stemming from this medical manuscript account for sixty percent of the prescriptions in the “Shuhokiku”.
    (3) The “Shuhokiku” is based on a medical system of “basic and modified prescriptions.” The numerous modified prescriptions cited in the “Shuhokiku” demonstrate that the work relied heavily on the “Wanbing Huichun.”
    (4) Various editions of the “Shuhokiku” are classified into three groups.

Episodic angioedema with eosinophilia (EAE) is an idiopathic condition characterized by recurrent symptoms such as angioedema, urticaria, and eosinophilia. We report a case of a 25-year-old woman with the non-episodic variant of this condition (NEAE) who was treated with acupuncture.
The patient presented with a two-week history of generalized itching and angioedema. Erythema, bilateral limb edema, and swelling and pain of both wrists and ankles were noted. As antiallergic medication administered for several days was ineffective, she was admitted to our hospital. Hematologic investigations revealed a white blood cell count of 11850/mm3 with 64.2% eosinophils (7610/mm3). Histopathologic examination of a cutaneous biopsy specimen indicated an eosinophilic infiltration localized around blood vessels in the superficial dermal layers. NEAE was diagnosed on the basis of these findings. Acupuncture treatment was performed according to Traditional Chinese Medical theory. Itching was alleviated following acupuncture treatments and relapsed on days when acupuncture was not administered. However, edema and itching gradually diminished between acupuncture treatments, in parallel with resolution of the peripheral eosinophilia. In this case, acupuncture treatment was effective for alleviating itching in NEAE.

We will report 2 cases of posttraumatic neck syndrome being successfully treated with Hochu-ekki-to and Goreisan.
A 52-and a 47-year-old women suffered the posttraumatic neck syndrome (whiplash injury) by the traffic accident. They did not respond to NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) for several months. According to the “Shou” (“Kikyo” and “Suitai”) of these patients, we prescribed Hochu-ekki-to and Goreisan.
Whiplash injury is a soft tissue injury of the neck, and said to be “Oketsu” because the presence of the internal hemorrhage in the soft tissue is believed. But we did not find “Oketsu” in our 2 cases. Chronic pain patients are often “Kikyo”, thus we assume treatments on “Kikyo” should be effective in posttraumatic neck syndrome.
