The crude drug “mao” prepared from
Ephedra herbs has been used for perspiratory, antitussive and anti-allergic purposes as well as for anti-inflammatory purposes in Oriental medicine and (+) -pseudoephedrine has been characterized as the anti-inflammatory principle. In this study, it was found that among the various preparations of
Ephedra herbs, the content of pseudoephedrine was generally in parallel with the anti-inflammatory activity and those which were rich in content of pseudoephedrine exhibited intense anti-inflammatory effects, demonstrating pseudoephedrine to be a main anti-inflammatory principle. Clinical effectiveness of preparations which contain more pseudoephedrine and less ephedrine waits for further evaluation.
