Patients with bone metastasis after mastectomy under go chemotherapy and radiation therapy that keeps them hospitalized due to the difficulty of home management because of pain and limitation in activity. Nurses are encouraged to respect autonomy, could expand the scope of activity of daily living (ADL) and to improve patient quality of life (QOL).
We studied how nursing should be provided to patients with bone metastasis. Three subjects were selected. All had bone metastasis within 10 years after the initial mastectomy and were hospitalized. The nursing practice to respect autonomy and QOL allowed some to be discharged when patients and families so desired. Patient who stayed in hospital could enhance QOL, indicating the effectiveness of the practice.
The following are key factors in nursing care of breast cancer patients with bone metastasis :
1. Respect the patient's autonomy and improve QOL.
2. Manage pain and palliate symptoms.
3. Rehabilitate as much as possible.
4. Expand the scope of ADL and prepare for discharge.
5. Establish communication and trust.
6. Maintain a sense of happiness and stable feeling.
