The nuclear movement and division during the spore germination and the protonema growth in the mosses, Pogonatum inflexum, Funaria hygrometrica and Rhizomnium tuomikoskii were observed.

  HCl-Giemsa staining method (TANAKA and KOGA 1972) was used for the nuclear staining of spore and protonema cells. This staining method was found to be effective for the nuclear staining of these materials.

  Mitotic figures could be observed in only the spore cells under germination, the apical cells of protonema and the protonema cells under branching.
