A forensic examination is a top-to-toe examination looking for injuries and taking samples that may be used as evidence in a police investigation and any subsequent prosecution. The type of forensic examination most people know about revolves around violent crimes. Forensics used in these investigations can uncover scientific evidence that may provide enough proof or evidence to convict a violent criminal. A forensic examination can be very time-consuming but is vitally important. Histories from caregivers should be obtained separately and as soon as possible; careful documentation is essential. In this paper, important points of the causal relationship between the cause of death and characteristic autopsy findings are discussed in the three cases.

When the characteristic curve of a phosphor plate is obtained, the fading effect should be considered. In the case that numerous data are taken on a phosphor plate using the time-scale method and/or the distance-changing method, it is difficult to correct the fading effect. Therefore, we have developed a new experimental apparatus which can measure the characteristic curve in a short period of time using only a single exposure. The apparatus consists of a shielded box having one longitudinal slit on the front face and a plate-type shield having six transverse slits with different ranges (multi-slits) . The multi-slits can be moved within a range of 400 mm with a velocity of 200 mm/s. The phosphor plate is set in the back face of the shielded box and X-rays are irradiated with the box through the moving multi-slits. As a result, six measured areas, which are irradiated for different times, are obtained on the phosphor plate, and the characteristic curve is determined by the single irradiation. In this paper, using diagnostic X-ray equipment, we demonstrate that the proper characteristic curves can be measured for tube voltages of 40 kV to 100 kV.

The irregular form of surface of liver is one of the important signs in diagnosing fibrosis on images. A pathologist performs the definitive confirmed diagnosis of fibrosis by evaluating F-Grade with in the hepatic tissue of a liver biopsy. In this study, we developed a technique of automatically extracting a liver outline on EOB-enhanced hepatocyte-phase MRI images. After enhancing the liver edges using the unsharp-masking filter, the proposed method extracts the liver region automatically using the p-tile method. Next, the liver outline is automatically delineated by outline-determination processing. The F-Grade classification can be performed by the mean SD of the differences in positions between an outline and its polynomial fitting curve. The proposed technique was applied to 64 cases (F0: 9, F1: 15, F2: 12, F3: 11, and F4: 17) . The average error of automatic outlines to the manual outlines extracted by a radiologist was 0.78 mm (F0: 0.70 mm, F1: 0.77 mm, F2: 0.78 mm, F3: 0.71 mm, and F4: 0.86 mm) . The mean SD was significantly higher in the F3 group than in the F2 group (p<0.05, Tukey test) . In conclusion, the proposed technique may be useful for automatic classification of F-Grade on EOB enhanced MRI images.

Studies suggest association of retinal microvascular abnormalities with cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. Arteriolar narrowing, which can be assessed by arteriolar-to-venular diameter ratio (AVR) on retinal fundus images, is one of the findings for hypertensive retinopathy. We have been studying an automated method for measuring AVR in hope of improving diagnostic efficiency and consistency of ophthalmologists. One of the problems in our previous method was that the suboptimal segmentation accuracy of the major arteries, especially those with low contrast and central reflex. In order to improve the recognition rate of major vessel pairs, synthetic vessel models were created, and the missed or broken arteries were identified by template matching. The method was applied to 22 retinal fundus images, including cases with arteriolar narrowing. By use of the models with 2 different shape profiles and various sizes, the major vessel recognition rate was improved from 72.7% to 90.9%. The proposed method may be useful in automated measurement of AVR.

Silicon X-ray diode (Si-XD) is a high-sensitivity Si photodiode (PD) selected for detecting X-rays, and the X-ray sensitivity of the Si-XD was 2 times as high as that of Si-PD with a cerium-doped yttrium aluminum perovskite [YAP (Ce) ] crystal scintillator. X-ray photons are directly detected using the Si-XD without a scintillator, and the photocurrent from the diode is amplified using current-voltage (I-V) and voltage-voltage (V-V) amplifiers. The output voltage from the V-V amplifier is sent to an analog-digital converter. Computed tomography (CT) system was constructed using the Si-XD to evaluate imaging characteristics. CT is accomplished by repeated linear scans and rotations of an object, and projection curves of the object are obtained by the linear scan. The exposure time for obtaining a tomogram was 5 min at a scan step of 0.5 mm and a rotation step of 3.0°. The maximum output voltage from the V-V amplifier is regulated to 3.0 V to perform CT, and the CT was carried out using gadolinium-based contrast media.
