In order to clarify the influence of pre-heat treatment on the accuracy of heat treatment simulation results, measurements of the phase transformation properties and the heat treatment simulations were performed on three pre-heat treated steels with different carbon concentrations.
The investigation results of high carbon steel indicated that spheroidal carbides were generated by pre-heat treatment, i.e. annealing process, consequently, the solute carbon in the retained austenite was decreased and the transformation temperature rose.
Simulations were performed using the carbon concentration and the transformation temperature derived from the chemical composition in the conventional way.
The simulation results, i.e. residual stress and deformation of high carbon steel were different from the experimental results.
The carbon concentration and the transformation temperature based on the above investigation result were considered in the simulation as a new way.
The simulation results derived in the new way corresponded to the experimental results.
Regarding low and medium carbon steels, these phenomena did not appear significantly.
Therefore, it implies that the conventional way is applicable to these steels.
