This paper provides a systematic overview of neuroaesthetics research on the brain mechanisms underlying visual aesthetic experience and evaluation. By reviewing previous empirical literature on the functions of the subcortical reward system and prefrontal regions, as well as inter-regional brain networks, the paper discusses what brain responses contribute to aesthetic appreciation.
