In the Rhythm-based Prosodic Bootstrapping Hypothesis, it is proposed that infants' early sensitivity to the rhythmic properties of a language will enable them to adopt a metrical speech segmentation strategy appropriate for their language. The proposal was borne out of recent research in infant speech perception which demonstrated that young infants are sensitive to prosodic properties of language that are relevant to linguistic rhythm. Systematic evaluation of the literature revealed that while the acquisition of stress-timed languages appear to fit the prediction of the bootstrapping hypothesis, data from the other languages are not so clear. Japanese data, in particular, is not consistent with the hypothesis. It is argued that the rhythm of a language may be salient for infants in all languages, but how this sensitivity is linked to other aspects of language acquisition may differ for the three rhythm types.

In this paper we describe a newly developed assessment method of Japanese mora timing, which is the foundation of the rhythm of the Japanese language, based on the phonetic segment technique. In this technique time-spectral patterns of uttered speech are transferred to the phonetic segment labels every 8ms frame shift. First, we propose a consonant region and vowel region estimation algorithm based on the phonetic segment labels. Next, we calculate the mora length simply and accurately by the number of phonetic segment labels and evaluate the pronunciation of foreign students. Furthermore, by using the utterance data of Japanese students, we show that the permissible variation based on the type of each mora and adjacent mora differs. We claim that the proposed method of evaluating the validity of a foreign student's mora timing by using the mora length and the ratio of each mora length to the whole word length is effective.

In smooth and cooperative human-to-human conversations, the prosody as pitch is synchronized between speakers. From this, it is expected that there are some relations between various prosodic changes and the impressions of the conversations. It is necessary to understand what factors are involved in meaning the conversation smooth and lively. In this paper, we analyzed the correlation between the fundamental frequency's synchrony tendency or overlap frequency, and subjective measures of "liveliness" and "familiarity" in human-to-human dialog. As a result, when the prosodic change of speakers synchronized well, it seemed the dialog became familiar, lively, and frank, and the speakers were in agreement. It is shown that the impression signifiers of the conversation are able to be evaluated with only the use of prosodic information.
