The job of engineers is to create a new product or a new process which never existed in nature. When developing a new product or a new process, it is very important to define the ideal function of them, ideal function is a key engineering conceppt, and not a concept of science. Quality engineering, also known Taguchi methods in U.S., uses signal-to-noise ratio as a measure of the robustness of a product or process function. This article explains the basic strategy of using signal-to-noise ratio from the viewpoilt of engineering.

A case study with the same title as this paper was reported in the Vol.3, No.1 of this Journal. lt was the first ease study ever published on the optimization of chemical reactions using the dynamic operating window type S/N ratio. But some factorial effects showed either V-shape or mountain- shape, indicating the existence of non-additivity. In the S/N ratio of dynamic operating window, the difference between two reaction speeds(the speed of the objective product and the speed of side reacted products) was used as the numerator. The denominator is naturally the error. But the results of experiment showed the reaction speed of side reacted products was much smaller than that of the objective product In this paper, analysis was made by putting more importance on sensitivity (reaction speed) rather than robustnese and linearity. lnstead of using the difference between two reaction speeds, their ratio was used as the numerator. Also the reaction speeds were observed and analyzed at several stages in the reaction.

Recently, the pollution of river and sea water is getting more and more serious. One of the source of pollution is the drain water firom washing machines. ln this paper, an attempt was made to develop a detergent separation system for washing machine drain water using the Dynamic Operating Window in Taguchi Methods. The approach shown in this study has a huge potential of applieation in many areas.

Today, environmental protection is one of the most important tasks worldwide. In the manufacturing of refrigerators and freezers, certain types of cooling mediums can no longer be used, in order to prevent the ozone layer from further destruction. Many manufacturers have started to use HFC series chemieals as alternative cooling mediums. Our company has also developed this type of refrigerators, which are quite popular in the market However, the use of such substitutional materials are accompanied with some problems such as low compressor efficiency, poor compatibility with oils, and high audible noise. In this study, the quality engineering approach was applied to improve the efficiency of reciprocal type compressors, also to reduce the noise level. As a result, the cooling capacity of compressors was improved to as high as 7.8 percent in the confirmatory experiment ln the test of some compressor models, the noise level became so low that it could not be detected by the measuring device.
