In the last edition, I explained that we used the SN Ratio to show system functionabilities and dispersions of output characteristics in "Quality Engineering". ln this edition, I would like to explain how we should evaluate the functionabilities and the dispersions in various conditions. When people evaluate the characteristic dispersions, they make many samples repeatedly, and wait for random errors to occur. However, engineers who know Robust Design forcefully change the levels of noise(the causes of dispersion) and input signal to see how the output actually vary.

The fine ceramics used for electronic and mechanical component parts are generally manufactured through sintering, then processed to obtain expected dimensions by grinding. There are many factors involved in a grinding process such as types of grinding wheels, dressing and grinding conditions, etc. Those factors affect the grinding performance in a complex way. This experiment was conducted in order to improve the performance of the grinding process. In the experiment, the types of grinding wheels and dressing conditions were taken as control factors, the grinding wheel moving distance which changes the amount ground as the signal factor, and the materials to be processed such as alumina and silicon, whose hardness is quite different, were considered as the noise factor. From the experiment, a significant improvement was obtained after optimization.

IC fabrication system involves six sub-processes: resist-spin-coating, exposure, development, descurnming, metal-evaporation, and resist-patterns-removal, ln order to optimize the whole fabrication system, the methods of quality engineering were utilized. ln this study two signal factors were used to develop the generic function of product and the process engineering simultaneously. The SN ratios and sensitivity indexes were used for the optimization. As a result, the standard deviation was reduced to one half in the initial condition. Thus the developrnent of technology of fine line fabrication and the establishment of the product engineering are done effectively.
