In the era of diversified information, the demand of electronic document processing is becoming stronger and stronger. Today, it is indispensable to use electronics for data base processing. The methods transforming printed documents into electronic codes have been commercialized, however, technologies to recognize hand writing have not been well developed yet. In this paper, the improvement of hand writing recognition, which is to recognize the pattern of multi-dimensional information, was studied using MTS (Mahalanobis-Taguchi System). It has been confirmed the application of MTS is effective for multi-dimensional information. This study aimed to apply the method to a new field of multi-dimensional information processing.

Worm processing is not a new processing method, but it is a high productivity process because there is little material waste and low energy consumption. Worms are used for the speed reduction mechanisms where high precision is required. Since worms have three dimensional curved surfaces, it is difficult to evaluate the quality. In this study, the process was optimized by improving its generic function.

Grease consists of the base oil, thickeners, and additives. Recently, it has been recognized that the quality of greases greatly affects the function of component parts. The grease used for a constant velocity joint, which is a component part in automotive powertrain systems needs to prevent flaking by the fatigue of joint component parts. Generally, such evaluations are done using durability tests with actual products. In this study, the quality engineering approach was used for product development. For the ideal function, it was considered that friction. should be consistent under various usage conditions. In other words, the ideal function follows the basic law of friction:friction is proportional to load. The following zero-point proportional equation was used : y=βM where y is load and M is fuction. Oscillation, friction and wear tester was used to measure friction. Frequency, stroke and temperature were compounded to be the noise factor. Control factors such as thickener, additive types and the amount of additives were assigned to an L18 orthogonal array. The optimum condition was determined with more emphasis on improving sensitivity.

Parameter Design of a Cooling System Using Paper-made Components Utilization of falls for cooling the components in a machine is the most popular and inexpensive method. In the designing of a fan, the shapes are detemined from the results of measuring the actual machine temperature. However, the method based on the evaluation of temperature is usually costly and time consuming. This fact inspired the idea of measuring "wind". Right after the idea of trying to measure wind, another new idea came out to use paper to make the components for the test. By combining the ideas of measuring "wind" and using "paper" for the experiment, the parameter design was completed in a short period of time with little cost.

In the research and development for a new material, it is important to evaluate the strength under various conditions. A measuring device called strain gauge is often used for its simplicity. In the development of the material for gas turbine engines, high temperature and high pressure are typical extreme environmental conditions. Under such extreme conditions, the conventional gauge peels off, disconnecting the gauge and the lead wire. In this study, it was necessary to provide a very thin film as a connecting media between the strain gauge and the lead wire. For this purpose, "sputtering" and "parallel-gap welding" methods were used. In order to evaluate the results, voltage-current relationship was used as the generic function instead of measuring strength the traditional quality characteristic.

Since the door window system is repeatedly used by the vehicle owner, it has a great influence on his perception of quality. The performance of the door window system is dependent on manufacturing and assembly variations in the weather-strips, door sheet metal, regulator, regulator motor, glass etc. The Taguchi Tolerance Design of Experiment was performed using computer simulation to evaluate window performance in terms of glass speed and stall force. As a result of this study, tolerances of component design parameters of the door window system were determined using percentage contribution analysis much earlier than previous design practices would have provided. Also, Quality Loss Function (QLF) methodology was used to make decisions about relaxing/tightening tolerances.
