This paper presents an experimental approach of the shear resistance estimation method of the filled materials in the check dam. Both the granular size effect and the compaction effect on the shear resistance of the filled materials are investigated and the significant effect of the compaction is pointed out. The empirical prediction method of the shear resistance∼shear deformation relationship considering the compaction effect is proposed. It is found that using void ratio as the representative compaction parameter, the proposed method can express the change of the shear resistance∼deformation relationship very well.

A study of snow avalanche jumping-up phenomenon which strikes an inclined plane is carried out, and which is important to design deflectors and arrestors. The behavior of an avalanche which collided a deflector was recorded at four-second intervals in the field, and jumping height and length was also analyzed. The result of analysis suggests that jumping-up velocity (V
a) is smaller than striking velocity (V
b) against deflector. Velocity reduction coefficient (k) is defined as V
a/V
b, and physical significance is also considered.
Model experiment which strikes a snow avalanche to an inclined plane is examined to clarify the relationship between velocity reduction coefficient (k) and the angle of incidence (φ). Jumping height and length of full-scale avalanche which had struck the deflector was explained to use the velocity reduction coefficient (k)

The Hyogoken-nanbu earthquake in 1995 has led to numereous slope failures both in Rokko mountain and Awaji island. The features of slope failures related to lateral faulting or horizontal acceleration by the earthquake are discussed, and their change by subsequent rainfall events are followed.
The earthquake has induced to the numerous slope failures at steep slope segments or near shoulders in dry state. The slip surfaces were shallow and plannar, suggesting that the failures were largely controlled by friction. The failed slopes were located almost at a particular site where the movement of fault or fault blocks made the landmass unstable. The situation is remarkable especially at east-faced slopes located at the northwest side of right-lateral faults, and at the east or north-faced slopes of the northeastern Rokko mountain.
An enlargement or renewed occurrence of slope failures by the subsequent rainfall events has occured in proportion to the number of slope failures due to the earthquake. The portions with intensive slope failures by the earthquake show also the subsequent enlargement and the renewed occurrence of the slope failures by the rainfall events. This means that the failures by the rain are supplementary to those by the earthquake, and also the tendency that they increase reciprocally to the number of the latter.

At the up-stream of a consolidation dam, the river bed is generally flat and water flows uniformly at a shallow depth. As a result, the migration of fish is disturbed. More attention must be paid to the scouring which can converge water just at the up-stream of a dam. The relationship among the depth of water, the height of the river bed, and the shape of a notch is investigated.
By comparing the cross section of several notch patterns, some tendencies have come to light. First relatively wider notches (for example, 5.0m in width and 0.30m in depth) have turned out to be more effective for water convergence than the narrower ones (for example, 2.0m in width and 0.5m in depth). Secondly, as a function of water convergence, the shape of notches influences on the river bed form not only at the up-stream of the dam, but through the whole channel as well. As a conclusion, a model on the relationship between a notch and water convergence is proposed and a shape of the notch for more suitable river bed for fish migration is suggested.
