The Kunimiyama Mine is about 15 km north of Kochi City. The ore bodies of the mine are typical of the iron-manganese ore deposits in Japan.
The rocks in this region belong to the Chichibu Paleozoic system and are quartzite, schalstein, sandstone, clayslate, and tuffaceous clayslate bearing other slumped rocks. Diabase intrusives are probably of Cretaceous age.
The ore deposits of the Kunimiyama Mine occur as lenticular or irregular platy bodies between quartzite and schalstein in most cases. In general, the shape of the ore deposits is related to folds of country rocks.
Alteration of the wall rocks in these ore deposits took place in the following order: silicification→infusion of iron as the oxide→carbonatization, chlorititzation, serpentinization, silicification.
Fossiliferous carbonate rock is intercalated in between the ore bodies and quartzite.
The main ore is an iron-manganese ore consisting of minerals like bixbyite and sitaparite. The following order of crystallization of ore minerals is recognized minerals like bixbyite and sitaparite→rhodonite rhodochrosite→penwithite, bementite.

In the district of Pangchiapu, southern Chahar, North China, the Sinian system overlies the PreSinian gneiss in a distinct angular unconformable relationship. The System is composed of two parts, the lower and the upper. The lower part can be further divided into five beds: (a) coarse sandstone, (b) slate, (c) quartzite, (d) siliceous slate and (e) phyllite. The upper part is composed of three beds: (f) lower siliceous limestone, (g) siliceous sandstone and (h) upper siliceous limestone. The beds (a) through (h) are in ascending order. The lower part corresponds to the Hoshan Sandstone of the Lower Sinian and the upper part to a comparatively lower part of the Nankou Limestone of the Middle Sinian. The stratigraphy and the succession of the Sinian rocks in this district are herein described briefly and correlated to those of other districts in North China.
Hsuanlung type hematite ores, with an oolitic or. stromatolitic texture form well-defined beds, alternating with siliceous slate and quartzitic sandstone with low-grade iron ore in the above mentioned siliceous slate (d). This paper presents a discussion of the formation of the oolitic and stromatolitic textures and the mechanism of the sedimentation of the ore deposits.

The basal clay of the Noborikawa coal-bearing formation of the Ishikari Series was a thin residual soil on a peneplain developed on the surface of upper Cretaceous formation. It was lateritic and is thought to have formed under semi-arid climatic conditions. Subsequently, when the stage of land depression and rainy condition came, it became residue insitu. In this stage, forests became dense in the area of the margin, or inside, of the shallow wide lake which formed the original basin in which the Ishikari Series was deposited. The lateritic soil was later buried by coal deposits and metamorphosed to kaolinite. The clay bed may be contemporaneous to the Akasaki Beds, the basal Palaeogene formations in northern Kyushu.
