    This paper proposes a method for solving stress and vibration problems of a coil spring of general shape having an arbitrarily shaped cross section. The stress formulae and the frequency equation for the spring have been obtained. The analysis treats four important problems of cylindrical coil springs with circular, elliptical, rectangular and oval cross sections, and clarifies the stresses around the surfaces of the coil. As a typical problem of springs of general shape, hyperboloidal and barrel springs have been considered, and the vibration characteristics of these springs have been discussed in detail.

    Model analysis and Newmark's β method were applied to the dynamic response analysis for coil springs using finite element method. As to the model analysis, its theory was explained, and as to the Newmark's β method, the detailed algorithm and the various examples of application were shown. Particularly, as for the simulation of the dynamic behavior of valve springs, by showing the many analytical solutions, it was elucidated that the Newmark's β method is effective for real problem.

  • Mechanism of Arising of Lateral Deflection

    When the coiled springs are parallely compressed, the lateral deflections arise before the compressive loads arrive at the critical ones. In comparison with to the londitudina deflection, the lateral deflections are small. But if the springs are closely to other mechanical members, springs may touch the others and the repetition of the touches may cause the accidents. In this paper, the following model was introduced; by regarding coiled springs as the columns whose rigidities are the same as ones of the springs, lateral deflections are caused by the loads and moments which act both spring ends. And for the data of model calculation, the moving of Tip Contact Points accompanied with compression were obtained by experiments.

    We can find the leading paper on spiral springs which had been published in 1952 in Japan. Among foreign reports published in recent years, we can not find papers that surpass the reference 1). For example, the paper 2) based on the same idea as the paper 1) and the paper 3) is rather based on weak grounded suppositions. And, because the equation of spiral springs is expressed into integral equation, it is difficult to analyze practically by manual calculation. Therefore, in this report, we try to analyze numerically such integral equation based on the idea of reference 1) and 2). Applying this method, it becomes possible to consider the distribution of material constants through the annealed transition zone Furthermore, we can get the residual stress distribution along the strip.

    The features which are common to wire-formed springs and stabilizer bars are that
    _??_ the cross-sectional form of materials is circular, and
    _??_ those are formed by bending one round bar.
    The finite element method program which utilizes such common features and is versatile was developed. BASIC was adopted as the language, and it aims at using in personal computers.
    In this report, emphasis is placed on the basic concept and the introduction of the analysis examples, and as to the formulation, all were omitted.

    Rotating bending fatigue test (of Nakamura type) is usually applied to valve spring wires to estimate the fatigue strength, but it seems difficult to use it for the evaluation of fatigue strength of valve springs, for fatigue characteristics seen in wires and springs are quite different. This paper presents effects of annealing temperatures and shot peening operation on the rotating bending fatigue strength of Si-Cr oil tempered wire to conclude that the fatigue strength of the wire is strongly affected with its tensile strength and surface roughness.

    The atmospheric exposure test of various stainless steel wires has been carried out for ten years in three places, that is, a coastal area, a costal industrial zone and a suburb. As the results, the following facts were found. In general austenitic stainless steel wires, the rate of rusted area and pitting density were small, but the pitting occurred tended to advance deeply, therefore, care must be taken. In ferritic stainless steel wires, the overall corrosion progressed, therefore, the rust quantity was much, but the deep pitting was rather few. Even in the kinds of steel in which the rate of rusted area was large, the rate of cross section reduction was slight, therefore, the lowering of tensile strength was small.
    As to the effect of the places of exposure, in the coastal area where specimens were exposed to Cl-, the deterioration was most severe, the coastal industrial zone followed this, and in the suburb, it was mild.
    When stainless steel wires were exposed being brought in contact with other metal wires, in the case of the other metal being copper, the deep pitting advanced, and in zinc or aluminum, they tended to be protected.
