    In this paper, I regard the period from 1960 to 1965, when sugar production recovered to the prewar level after the war in Okinawa, as the reconstruction period of sugar industry, and research what kind of people were responsible for the operation of the sugar factory increasing rapidly during this period. We will consider whether it was done by paying attention to the engineers of the sugar factory which started running in early 1960s. In recent years, while the focus has been on sugar industry engineers and skilled workers in the history of modern imperial Japanese sugar industry, it is not yet in the history of postwar Okinawa. Studies on sugar industry in postwar Okinawa have focused on the sugar economy of Okinawa society and farmer household, and percentage of capital structure of sugar company. Therefore, these have overlooked or not concerned about engineers. This paper clarify that the sugar factory actual sites were carried out by skilled workers who had experience in sugar factories in the prewar Micronesia, Taiwan, and the postwar Minamidaito Island by analyzing engineers in Hokubu Seito sugar corporation, which started in1960 at northern part of Okinawa Island. The former skilled workers of Nanyo Kohatsu sugar factory in Micronesia have obtained sugar production skills by OJT and studied in advanced vocational school for sugar engineering of the corporation, and after war and repatriation, found a job in Hokubu Seito. Workers from Daito Togyo factory in Minamidaito Island which started to run in 1951, moved to Hokubu Seito, who could use the network of Izena and Iheya islands. It can be said that the Okinawa sugar industry was revived by the smooth operation of the sugar factory started by their skilled worker technological capabilities, and that the engineers from two Japanese south expansion places were familiar with the people, who had formed their "Imperial careering" in Taiwan and contributed to the reconstruction of postwar Okinawa society.

    サトウキビモザイク病は,沖縄県では一般ほ場においてF160及びF161に発見されたため,本病の実態調査及び伝染経路について調査を行った。
    (1) 今回の一般ほ場における本病の発生をみるまではガラス室及び隔離ほ場でのみ発見されていた。
    (2) 1977年2月名護市真喜屋でF160及びF161に発見その他NCo310, NCo334, NCo376, IRK67-1等にも本病の発生を確認した。
    (3) 実態調査の結果,北部の金武,宜野座,伊是名村を除く全市町村及び中部の沖縄市登川等広域に分布していることが認められた。
    (4) 外国からの導入品種,種子島からの原々種苗,系適用種苗及び黒穂病特検用種苗においても罹病株が大分みられた。
    (5) 罹病株を抜取ったり,発生ほ場の全株を植換えた場合でも,その隣接ほ場に発病株がある場合は再発生が認められた。また,トウモロコシの間作ほ場でも,トウモロコシの発病は母茎にはなく,分けつ茎にみられている。これらのことから,アブラムシによる伝染が示唆される。

    The purpose of this article is to trace the evolution of sugar production in Okinawa under U.S. rule and to position the issues that emerge from this as key to the study of the contemporary history of Okinawa. The article first discusses the question of the significance of the island’s existence as a sugar-producing region. During the postwar period in which Japan lost control of Taiwan and the South Sea islands, it was likely that Okinawa would heighten its potential as a sugar-producing region. In fact, its sugar production expanded rapidly in the early 1960s due to policies to increase domestic sugar production. However, after the Japanese government took steps to liberalize sugar imports in 1963, the production of sugar in Okinawa began to decline, accelerating the withdrawal of labor force from agriculture. It is thus obvious that the same problem that modern Okinawa faced as a sugar-producing region continued until the 1960s, and this should be positioned as a key issue in the study of contemporary Okinawan history. The second point concerns the labor force that withdrew from agriculture during the periods of contraction of sugar production. Of particular importance here is the issue of the expansion of low-wage labor and underemployment in the Okinawan labor market in the late 1960s, as female laborers who had left agriculture remained without employment opportunities. By focusing on this issue, it becomes possible to analyze the relation between the agricultural problems during the period of U.S. occupation and the labor problems that ensued in the post-reversion eras.

    An account was given of the variations of shell color and the patterns of sculpture of an intertidal common gastropod, Monodonta labio (Linne) from the Japanese Islands. Four color forms were recognized. Darkgreen shell color with red or white dots (Form A) and yellow shell color with dark-red dots (Form B) were common, while light green shell color with red dots (Form C) and yellow shell color with green or red dots (Form D) were rare. Forms A, C and D had smaller number of granules on body whorl and smaller numbers of cords, as compared with Form B of the same size. These differences between Forms A and B were significant at the co-occurring areas, except in Amami Ohshima. They occurred sympatrically in southern coast of Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, Okinawa islands and in Hong Kong, southern coast of China. But the difference in habitat was observed between the two forms : Form A occurred mainly on the wave-exposed shore, while Form B on the sheltered shore or the reef-barriered shore. Monodonta labio has been considered, by some workers, to consist of two subspecies, Monodonta labio labio and Monodonta labio confusa. Considering shell characters of these forms, Forms A, C, D and Form B were referred to M. labio confusa and M. labio labio, respectively. But from this study, it is evident that these forms are neither allopatric subspecies nor two extreme variations.

    限外濾過器を使用して,新鮮甘蔗汁の石灰添加による清澄効果を検討した.
    甘蔗汁を所定のpHに10°Cで石灰添加により調整し,それぞれの甘蔗汁を, PM-30膜を使用して60および67°Cで限外濾過を行った結果, pH 8.1および8.5で著しく高い透過流束が得られた.これらの透過液は純糖率が高く,色度はpH 8.5で著しく増大したことから,清澄効果の最適条件はpH 8.1と結論した.
    次に,甘蔗汁をpH 8.1に調整して限外濾過したとき,透過流束に及ぼす諸条件を検討した結果透過流束は,温度の上昇,撹拌速度および圧力の増大に伴って著しく増大する結果を得た.
    さらに,甘蔗汁のpH調整を10, 30および85°Cで行い, 80°Cで限外濾過を行った結果,それぞれpH 8.1, 7.8および7.0で最大透過流束を示し,前二者の透過液のpHはそれぞれ7.2または7.3に低下した.また,透過液の残存石灰量は無処理の甘蔗汁よりも低い値を示した.さらに,リン酸含量も著しく減少し,石灰添加と限外濾過との併用によってほとんどのリン酸が不溶性のリン酸カルシウムとして除去されることがわかった.
    製糖工程でも清澄汁のpHが7.2~7.3 (コールドライミング)および7.0 (ホットライミング)となるように石灰添加を行えば,純糖率の高い甘蔗汁が得られ,砂糖の収量が増大する可能性があることが示唆された.

    Studies were carried out on the prepared of a new chemical pulp (PAP) and semichemical pulp (PASCP) from bagasse without depithing by hydrogen peroxide-alkali (PA) process.
    The cooking liquor was a mixture of water, hydrogen peroxide 15%, sodium hydroxide 1020%, on raw materials and small quantities auxilialies, (chelating agents : EDTA or DTPA0.3%, and anthraquinone AQ 0.010.05% on raw materials) the liquor ratio of mixture to bagasse being 10 l/kg. PAP (total yield of 46.554.2%, rejects 1.08.8% and the screened 38.648.4%) was easily obtained from bagasse without depithing after cooking for 11.5 hours at about 150°C.
    Increasing alkali in PA cooking liquor resulted in increasing the screened and decreasing rejects. Increasing hydrogen peroxide in PA cooking liquor resulted decreasing rejects and Kappa no. of the screened. Increasing of AQ in PA cooking liquor resulted incresing in the screened and decreasing rejects.
    The analysis of unbleached PAP gave kappa no. 5.011.5, Klason lignin about 1%, pentosan 2126% and whiteness 4048 Hunter. Unbleached PAP C-402 (total yield 48.0%, rejects3.1%, the screened 44.9%, kappa no. 7.5) has breaking length 4.5 km at 336 ml C. S. F.
    Bleached PAP C-104 (at 175 ml C. S. F.) has breaking length 6.7 km, burst factor 3.9, tear factor 49, folding endurance 290.

    日本で消費される砂糖の2/3は輸入原糖を国内で精製したものである。輸入比率の高いタイ国で生産された原糖を輸入し精製した場合のLC-CO2を積上げた。タイ農業消費肥料の殆どは輸入されている。タイ貿易統計より肥料輸入相手国を調べ、タイ農業消費肥料のLC-CO2も推算した。併せて公開されているブラジルのサトウキビ栽培における投入エネルギーよりLC-CO2を計算し、タイのサトウキビの値と比較した。

    Okinawa prefecture, consisting of the Ryukyu Islands in the southern part of Japan archiperago, is located in the subtropics. From ancient time, Okinawa had developed trading networks with China, Korea and many Southeast Asian countries and had received cultural influence from them. As the results, it is said that the foods consumed by, and food habits of, Okinawans, have been more similar to those in such countries than in Japan. The life span of Japanese has recently become longest in the world, and it has been longer in Okinawa than in any other prefectures. In this respect, special attention has been drawn to the historical aspects of Okinawan food habits. In the literature so far, however, typical foods, recipes and food habits in specific historical periods were documented but their compiled description throughout the history was lacking. This paper aims at a comprehensive description of the various events from the ancient time to the present to demonstrate their interrelation in a chronicle. Major a pects treated are introduction of foods, food production systems, food-processing, trades, marketing activities, food consumptions, religious roles of food services, and famines caused by natural and man-made disasters in relation to food habits.
