Aminodeoxykanamycin (abbreviated hereinafter as
AKM) is a new antibiotic which exhibits a strong antibacterial activity against both Gram-positive and -negative organisms. The present authors have applied
AKM to various infections in surgical field, and the results were obtained as follows.
(1) Aiming at the prophylaxis of post-operative infection, 400 mg/day of
AKM were administered for 5 days after the operation. The success was attained in 3 cases out of 4 cases.
(2) As for the treatment of infection, 200∼400 mg/day of
AKM were adm inistered intramuscularly for 2∼21 days to 13 patients consisting of 4 cases of peritonitis, 2 cases of enteric fistula, 3 cases of postoperative abscess due to thread, 1 case of perianal abscess and 3 cases of others. The results obtained were remarkably effective 2, effective 7, ineffective 3 and undecided I.
(3) The
AKM administration demonstrated a remarkable effect in 6 cases of post-operative urinary infection, all of which have been proved to be ineffective to other drugs.
(4) The values of GOT, GPT, AL-P, M. G. and BUN were m easured in all cases, and yet there observed no abnormality which would be caused by AKM administration.
