It is very tragic when a healthy person dies from accidental inhalation or ingestion of a foreign-body. This article focuses on primary care and first aid treatment. We report successful management of a 25-year-old male with a rice cake occluding the larynx and a 72-year-old female with peanuts in her bronchi. The techniques of emergency airway management are described.
Digestive tract accidents were: swalling dental prosthesis, and press-through packaged pills. The removal of foreign bodies from esophagus and the management of foreign body in the stomach are described. The decision to use a rigid or a flexible scope depends on the patient and is the same as with their use in local or general anesthesia.
Today, medical advances have made it possible to remove almost all foreign bodies, but doctors may be sued for delay, wrong diagnosis, complications caused by reckless extraction and other malpractices. Doctors should also be prepared to take care of all members of any group in travelling.
Furthermore, doctors should pay attention to invisible dust, tobacco smoke, pollen, bacilli, viruses, etc.
