A prototype of a software system for research on the automatic analysis of radiograms of stomach is proposed. The system has been designed based on the thought that more knowledge should be developed and embedded by the wide spectrum of researchers from radiologists to engineers in order to develop any automatic analysis system. The system is positively separated into processing unit programs which are independent of each other so that they can easily be modified and revised by many researchers. Also for this purpose, the programs are modularized, written by well known higher level language (FORTRAN) and “man-program interface” such as readability and writability is given greater importance than optimization. The system consists of eleven independent routines, which perform image input, image monitoring such as density distribution and statistics, binariza-tion by a dynamic threshold method, maximal shadow extraction using labeling technique, contour extraction using boundary following technique, thinning of the shadow, distance transformation, inverse distance transformation, medial axis setting, deletion of extra branches and feature extrac-tion and diagnosis of the contour. Examples processed by a large scale general-purpose computer are also presented for illustration.
