    To estimate the prognosis of bilateral cervical metastases from tongue carcinoma, we studied twelve patients (24-72 years old) who underwent neck dissections at our hospital to judge whether we should have performed radical treatment or not for those patients of tongue carcinoma who had bilateral metastatic nodes.
    The five-year survival rate of bilateral neck metastasis patients was 58% (the Kaplan-Meier method). On the other hand, the five-year survival rate of patients with only unilateral neck metastases of squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue was 56%. Thus, there was no statistical significant difference in survival rate.
    We conclude that even if a patient has metastatic lymph nodes on both sides of the neck, radical therapy should be done.

    In order to accelerate yield improvement in semiconductor manufacturing, it is important to prevent the root causes of product-specific failures, such as systematic defects and parametric defects, which are different for each product. We herein propose a method for the investigation of product-specific failures by estimating differences between the actual failing bit signatures (FBSs) and the predicted FBSs caused by random defects. In order to estimate these differences accurately, we have developed a novel algorithm by which to extract the critical area for each FBS. The total failure rate errors of FBSs are within ±0.5% for embedded SRAMs. The proposed method identified the root causes of product-specific failures in 150 and 65nm technology node products.

    Unidirectional solidification of eutectics offers a simple, inexpensive approach to the production of composite materials. The authors and co-workers have studied the production of fiber strengthening composite materials by various methods. In this paper, an attempt has been made to prepare Al-Si eutectic fibrous composites by means of unidirectional solidification. The main results are follows:
    (1) In order to produce continuous structures of Al-Si eutectic alloys, it was found that solidification rate was less than 1.5 mm/hr by using four or five nine aluminum and semi-conductor-grade silicon as materials.
    (2) The cross section of silicon colonies showed four-fold symmetry and side branching, and individual silicon colonies extended over several millimeters in the growth direction. Wavy patterns of silicon phase were observed among straight silicon colonies in a cross section parallel to the growth direction.
    (3) The growth mechanism of Al-Si eutectics seemed to differ from that of lamellar and rod-like structures, as silicon had a highly preferred growth direction. So the two phases did not exhibit any consistent orientation relationship.
    (4) Impurities of materials have a considerable effect on the growth of silicon phases. So, if the factors which effect the growth of silicon phases is found, the shape of silicon colonies may be controlled, for example, by adding the third element to Al-Si eutectics.

    We have reported that ingestion of the volatile fraction of winter savory (WSV) increased core body temperature (CBT), inhibited the decrease in body surface temperatures (BSTs) of the wrist, finger and ankle, and increased BSTs of the forehead and neck in humans who experience cold sensitivity. We also showed that carvacrol, a main component of WSV, contributed to the CBT-increase, but not to the inhibition of BSTs-decreases. Therefore, to elucidate the components in WSV affecting BST, we studied the effects of thymol, the second major component of WSV, on body temperature. Thymol ingestion inhibited BSTs-decreases of the wrist and finger. Moreover, changes in BST and CBT by a mixture of thymol and carvacrol were similar to those by WSV. These results suggest that thymol might facilitate heat transfer from the body's core to the surface, and that the combination of thymol and carvacrol greatly contributed to BST- and CBT-changes by WSV.

    A Spectrochemical addition method capable of alalysing the trace impurities in the order of 10−5% was studied, that is: (1) The width of “A” range, in which the light exposure on photographic emulsion is proportional to the opacity of developed plate, was examined from 2250 Å to 3500 Å, at very low intensity of incident light. (2) A foundamental theory of spectrochemical addition method in this range, including background correction,was derived. (3) The analytical procedures, applicable to industrial routine analysis, with attention to the precision and its control, were studied. The proposed method enables analyses of Cd, Fe,Sn and Pb in Zinc down to 0.0001%, with variation coefficient of 15%.

    This article provides the first critical review on the discovery and development of BaNdInO4. Exploring a new structure family of ionic conductors is an important task to develop ceramic ionic conductors. Since some A2BO4 compositions exhibit high oxide-ion conductivities, we investigated ABCO4 compositions to explore new oxide-ion conductors with A/B/C cation-ordered structures. Here A, B and C are cations [ionic radii: r(A) ≥ r(B) ≥ r(C)]. In 2014, we discovered a new material BaNdInO4 which belongs to a new structure family of perovskite-related structures. This BaNdInO4-type structure (monoclinic, P21/c) consists of alternative stacking of the A rare earth oxide unit and perovskite unit with a b c tilt system. We also discovered new materials BaRInO4 (R = Sm, Y, Ho, Er, Yb) having the BaNdInO4-type structure, and report their lattice parameters and anisotropic chemical expansion. Electrical conductivity of BaNdInO4 was higher than those of BaRInO4 (R = Sm, Y, Er). Oxide-ion conduction was dominant for BaNdInO4 in the P(O2) region from 3.8 × 10−22 to 5.5 × 10−9 atm at 858°C. Oxide-ion conductivities of Ba1.1Nd0.9InO3.95, BaSr0.1Nd0.9InO3.95 and BaCa0.2Nd0.8InO3.9 were higher than that of BaNdInO4. Structure analyses of Ba1.1Nd0.9InO3.95 and BaSr0.1Nd0.9InO3.95 indicated that the excess Ba and doped Sr cations were partially substituted for Nd cation and that there existed oxygen vacancies, leading to the increase of the carrier concentration and higher oxide-ion conductivity. Following the discovery of BaNdInO4, BaRScO4 (R = Nd, Eu, Y, Yb) and SrYbInO4 were reported as new ABCO4 materials. BaYScO4 and BaYbScO4 have the BaNdInO4-type structure. BaNdScO4 and BaEuScO4 crystallize into the space group Cmcm, which has a higher symmetry than P21/c for BaNdInO4. SrYbInO4 is the first example of pure oxide-ion conductors with CaFe2O4-type structure. Further investigations of ABCO4 compositions and BaNdInO4 related materials will lead to development of materials science and solid state ionics.

    Eutectic and hypereutectic Al-Si alloys were rapidly solidified at solidification rates of the order of 103°C/sec and more, and their microstructures and mechanical properties were investigated. By the rapid solidification, extremely fine eutectic structures with an average silicon size of 0.1μ were produced, and the solid solubility of Si in Al was much increased. For hypereutectics, a uniformly refined eutectic structure without primary silicon was produced up to 17 wt%Si by the rapid solidification. Mechanical properties of the Al-Si alloys were considerably improved, especially in hardness by the “quench-modification”, the maximum values of which were obtained by the precipitation of silicon particles from the supersaturated solution when aged at 130°∼150°C for 2 hrs.

      The glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GPD) gene of Lentinus edodes was isolated from a genomic DNA library and cDNA corresponding to this gene was isolated from a mycelium cDNA library. The L. edodes GPD gene was found to encode a 337-aa protein. By comparison of the cDNA and genomic DNA sequences, the presence of eight introns in the GPD gene was confirmed. The putative amino acid sequence of the L. edodes GPD gene product showed high similarity to those of other basidiomycetes. The results of Southern blot analyses suggested that only one copy of the GPD gene is present in the genome of L. edodes. The promoter region was found to contain a CT-rich stretch, two CAAT boxes and a consensus TATA box. In addition, the transcript of the GPD gene was found to be expressed constitutively and strongly. These results suggest that the promoter of the L. edodes GPD gene may be very useful as a component of transformation vectors.

    Thirty-six strains of acetic acid bacteria classified in the genera Acetobacter, Gluconobacter, and Acidomonas were examined for their partial base sequences in positions 1220 through 1375, 156 bases, of 16S rRNA. The strains of the Q10-equipped Gluconobacter species examined were divided into two subgroups, which included the type strains of Gluconobacter oxydans, the type species of the genus Gluconobacter, and of a second species, Gluconobacter cerinus, respectively. The base differences numbered four between the two type strains. The strains of the Q9-equipped species examined classified in the type subgenus Acetobacter of the genus Acetobacter were not very distant phylogenetically from those of the genus Gluconobacter. The calculated number of base differences was 9-6 between the type strains of G. oxydans and G. cerinus and the type strains of Acetobacter aceti and Acetobacter pasteurianus. In contrast, the strains of the Q10-equipped species examined classified in the subgenus Gluconoacetobacter of the genus Acetobacter were very distant phylogenetically from those of the Acetobacter and Gluconobacter species mentioned above. The number of base differences was calculated to be 14-8. Furthermore, the strains of the methanol-assimilating, Q10-equipped species of the genus Acidomonas examined were located in phylogenetically isolated positions. The type strain of Acidomonas methanolica (≡Acetobacter methanolicus), the type species of the genus Acidomonas, had 16-9 base differences. The data obtained here indicated that the members of the subgenus Gluconoacetobacter of the genus Acetobacter can be distinguished at the generic level. The new genus Gluconoacetobacter was proposed with the type species, Gluconoacetobacter liquefaciens, in recognition of the genus Acidomonas along with the genera Acetobacter and Gluconobacter in the classification of the acetic acid bacteria.

    70歳前後およびそれ以降にめまい発作が初発したメニエール病11例, 長期経過観察中に70歳以上に達したメニエール病10例について検討し以下の結論を得た. 1) 今後, 単に高齢者人口の増加のみならず, 要職にある高齢者や病気の家族の看病をしなければならない高齢者の増加が明確であるので, めまい発作が70歳以後に初発するメニエール病の増加が予想されることを念頭にいれて, 高齢者のめまい患者に対応する必要があろう. 2) 若年, 中年期に発症したメニエール病症例が70歳前後に達するときは, 回転性めまい発作を長期間認めない症例でも, 発症時の患側のみならず反対側の聴力低下に対する注意が必要である.

    本研究は,インドネシア.ボゴール市の市街地とその周辺部の景観と土地利用について,住民に写真を見せて判定を依頼し,視覚的選好を分析考察したものである。判定の対象は住宅地,河川沿い,商業地区,緑地帯及び畑地などとした。これらの判定ではSD法を用いて分析すると共に対象景観の選好の順位つけ試験をもおこなった。その結果,大枠において,前回に行った地図を用いた景観と土地利用の選好試験と同様の結果を得た。すなわち,自然発生的集落に比較して古い住宅地と新しい住宅地などが肯定的に判定された。また,交通渋滞を伴う商業地や市場などが好まれなかった。ボゴール市当局の計画決定に際しては,市民のこれらの選好を考慮に入れるべきであろう。

    Research and production of semiconductor materials have required reliable analytical methods for ultra-trace impurities in them. Radioactivation analysis is of the widest use, and many impurities have been determined by neutron activation. We established processes of analyzing semiconductor silicon for halogens, and determined them in the samples of various origins. Ultratraces of carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen should be determined by charged particle activation analysis. We set up the analytical processes and analyzed semiconductor silicons of various origins for the three elements. Thus, their behaviours in course of the zone-refining and the singlecrystal formation were examined and made clear, and such quantities as solubility of carbon in solid silicon at its melting point and equilibrium distribution coefficient of carbon in silicon were determined. Also, pyrolytic graphites were analyzed for trace nitrogen, and its behaviour was persuited.

    Developing a new IoT device input method that can reduce the burden on users has become an important issue. This paper proposed a system Stetho Touch that identifies touch actions using acoustic information obtained when a user's finger makes contact with a solid object. To investigate the method, we implemented a prototype of an acoustic sensing device consisting of a low-pressure melamine veneer table, a stethoscope, and an audio interface. The CNN-LSTM classification model of combining CNN and LSTM classified the five touch actions with accuracy 88.26%, f-score 87.26% in LOSO and accuracy 99.39, f-score 99.39 in 18-fold cross-validation. The contributions of this paper are the following; (1) proposed a touch action recognition method using acoustic information that is more natural and accurate than existing methods, (2) evaluated a touch action recognition method using Deep Learning that can be processed in real-time using acoustic time series raw data as input, and (3) proved the compensations for the user dependence of touch actions by providing a learning phase or performing sequential learning during use.
