Yamaguchi University has enhanced its chemical safety management system and educational framework following the 2023 legal revision on autonomous chemical substance control. As part of this effort, Yamaguchi University newly established the Chemical Substance Safety Promotion Office and first formulated the Basic Policy for Chemical Substance Management and developed the Yamaguchi University Autonomous Chemical Substance Management Guideline, with a risk assessment policy and implementation, and comprehensive safety education programs consisting of seven course curricula for all members in 2024. Safety education lectures for chemical handlers were initiated to adapt to the new autonomous chemical substance control system, covering chemical risk assessment, compliance with the Industrial Safety and Health Act, exposure evaluation and reduction, and hazard risk identification. In the laboratory facilities, partial reagent bottles were labeled with GHS information to promote safe handling of chemicals. GHS hazard information posters are displayed on the walls, and protective gloves and safety glasses are provided to ensure safe experimental practices. In chemistry education courses, first-year students receive new safety education lectures designed for autonomous chemical substance control. Comprehension safety test results indicated that these lectures effectively improve participants’ awareness and understanding of chemical hazards. Safety education programs will promote a safer research and educational environment for legal revision on autonomous chemical substance management at Yamaguchi University.
