Tourism demand is seriously affected by negative events, and Eastern Asia, which accounts for more than 60% of international visitors to Japan, is expected to experience a decline in population in next few decades. This study focuses on the composition of the travel market and uses COVID-19 as an example to investigate the relationship between the travel market dispersion and the resilience of tourism demand. As a result, this study found that the more dispersed the travel market in a tourism destination, the greater the resilience of tourism demand from COVID-19. In order to increase the dispersion of travel markets, this study focuses on potential tourists from South-Eastern Asia, where the population is on the rise, and proposed tourism policies for DMOs to increase the number of tourists from South-Eastern Asia.
