This hypothesis was tested in a nation-wide survey, conducted in December, 1975 (N=2164). The causal model in the present study is shown by Fig. 1.
To verify this hypothesis, the following seven variables were constructed; three indices of SES, i.e., education (years of schooling), occupation (coded by the prestige score obtained from the results of a nation-wide occupational prestige survey conducted in 1975) and income; three intervening variables, which were consisted of the sense of political efficacy (obtained by Guttman Scale), degree of political discussion and political concern; and the variable of political participation which was produced by the factor scores as a result of the factor analysis of six variables consisting of whether one has signed petition, collected signatures, pleaded issues to political powers, participated in demonstrations, gathered contributions or attended meetings about one's community problems.
The results show the existense of a hierarchical structure, which places SES level on the base, intervening level in the middle, and political participation level on the top. The correlations between SES and intervening variables, between intervening variables and political participation are strong, however correlations between SES and political participation are weak although showing significant level (Table 1).
As a next step, pass analysis was applied to these variables. The results show the following:
1) Among SES variables, education has the strongest causal effects to political participation, both directly and indirectly signifying that higher education directly influences higher political participation, and that higher education has affected the intervening variables, thus resulting higher levels of political participation.
2) Occupation has produced a relatively strong direct causal effect to political participation, but has produced weak indirect effects, signifying that high occupational prestige heightens to effect to political participation. However, it is not such an extent to influence upon the political participation via intervening variables.
3) In contrast, income has a weak direct causal effect to political participation, but it has produced strong indirect causal effects, resulting to influence intervening variables.
4) Among intervening variables, political concern shows the prime importance. High political concern plays a role of a strong mediator between SES and political participation.
5) In conclusion, it could be stated that political participation is strongly affected by Socio-Economic Status in the sense of demonstrating causal relationships among variables.
