Making use of the contrast and spatial resolution of X-ray CT (GE CT/T 8800), the weight (volume) of the thyroid gland was estimated. To decide the margin of the thyroid gland in CT images, a study was performed using 5 phantoms having different kinds of contrast ratios to the background. The weight of an in-house thyroid phantom was measured using a prepared program Volume, and the correction coefficient was calculated. The clinical data obtained by this method were compared with an another method for estimating the weight of the thyroid gland which is used for the radioisotope treatment of the hyperthyroidism. As a result, the values due to the CT program correlated well with those obtained with the use of the empirical formulae. The CT program was superior to the method of the empirical formulae in the patients with thyroid glands smaller than 18 grams. For estimating the weight of the thyroid galnds, the X-ray CT method was more accurate than theradioisot scan method and was more suitable for does calculation in the treatment of hyperthyroid patients.
