Coastal zones are productive areas for agriculture and fisheries. However, these areas are influenced by salinity intrusion. Saline water can be used to develop brackish fish farming, but it may reduce rice paddy yields. To understand the relationship between water withdrawal and salinity intrusion as well as water quantity and quality issues, the hydrodynamic model MIKE HYDRO has been applied to four water diversion scenarios in the Soc Trang and Bac Lieu provinces of Vietnam. The results showed that there is sufficient water available to meet all demand in terms of water quantity. However, salinity intrusion damages rice farming, and shrimp farming is impacted by low salinity. The model simulations for all scenarios displayed a lack of downstream freshwater releases that created regional conflicts over water resources. Investigations of salinity changes from water withdrawals can augment future water diversion plans to more effectively supply water to all end users as well as reduce conflicts from lack of water.
