This study examines the outcomes of linking taxonomy and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in biodiversity education for pre-service science teachers (PSTs). A five-lesson module was implemented with 91 PSTs across three classes, each divided into six groups (18 groups total), with each group assigned a taxonomic category. Each group was assigned a taxonomic group and selected one species to develop a lesson plan that connected to three SDG targets—one each from the environmental, social, and economic tiers of the SDGs Wedding Cake Model. Lessons based on animals were generally more coherent, while those on other taxa were less developed. While most groups effectively addressed targets in the environmental tier, targets in the social and economic tiers received less attention or were superficially treated. The findings suggest that SDG integration can help PSTs connect science content to sustainability themes, but more support is needed to strengthen understanding across all three tiers.
